Marissa Mayer Brouhaha: Work in the office; Enjoy your baby

This morning, my business partner emailed me the announcement that Yahoo's CEO Marissa Mayer terminated the work-at-home policy for Yahoo telecommuters (here's the full memo). It was an eyebrow raiser, being that we're both work-at-homers.  I have actually worked from home for seven years and love it, but I know it's not for everyone, or every company. Sabina then emailed me a query that I could answer from a journalist writing a story about said Yahoo shift, and I pitched in my thoughts. Shortly thereafter, my workday ended so that I could pick up my kids from daycare and begin the bedtime routine...But my curiosity was piqued...

My curiousity was piqued so much that I broke my no-phone-zone rule  during my kids bedtime routine to Google more about the telecommuting decision. Thanks to Google's auto-think, I ended up googling "marissa mayers baby", and was shocked to find the working mother community outraged over her statement that her "baby is easy" and "Yahoo is fun".

Those two things (easy babies, fun workplaces) are such hot-button issues,  I'm not going to touch them. I do think and hope that work is fun for people, and that yeah, they might have an easy baby, especially one that sleeps all the time in pictures, so go with it while you can (and childcare and housekeeping makes babies even easier). But what I am suspecting is that the telecommuting decision is getting double backlash because of the baby statement that preceded it.

Reading more I found that working mom guru Lisa Belkin wrote a charged piece about the easy baby comment, and now is challenging the anti-work from home decision, declaring it not family-friendly. In my experience, working from home and raising a family is actually extremely difficult, and I've made the decision to not do both simultaneously during the day (work and kids), as this writer describes while his baby almost gets smashed by his toddler because he's working while tending the kids (yes, happens to me too). Instead, I have daycare, and I have working hours, in which I plant myself in one of my three work-spaces: hiding in the basement, hiding in my bedroom, or living large in my real office when the kids are out of the house and I'm totally off-duty.

In Yahoo's statement on the telecommuting decision, they state that the decision comes from a strong desire to strengthen collaboration. At Tin Shingle, we aspire to be family-friendly, and part of that is working near our homes. Our team is all virtual, so there are no real office meetings or gatherings around copy machines, or birthday cakes or any of these other things that companies with offices do.

Despite the convenience of no commute and being in our comfort zones, I agree that collaboration is better in person. Just yesterday, I bought Sabina (and my daughter when she's there) a chair for my office desk (pictured here), so that we could "Battle Ship it" and collaborate at a desk when she comes out to my home office, instead of at my dining room table (and note my baby's chair as well, so that he can join in from the floor if he's at home).

I have a friend who is the editor of a magazine, and she mentioned to me that the publisher was considering having everyone work from home to cut costs. I gasped, because a magazine needs creative "gelling" and in-person collaboration to get completed. I couldn't imagine how someone would coordinate everyone's energy via GoToMeeting windows. (Which, btw, physically cuts off that collaboration immediately when the meeting presenter ends the call: you're completely disconnected from that energy, and might as well make a sandwich, read some emails, get distracted, and maybe hit your deadline discussed on the meeting at some point.)

I don't know the details of how everyone at Yahoo virtually communicates, but even as a veteran work-from-home person, I would agree with the decision at Yahoo, to pull everyone together to make some serious change and waves. But man, that's a major uprooting, and the point of it is to help people gel, but you don't want those people angry and resentful after a 180 degree change mandate.

So there you have it, those are my honest opinions...

Now, back to work everyone! Let Marissa do her thing! Maybe she really is having an easy time with their new baby. Let her be a newbie parent who makes newbie parent grandiose statements that end up being insensitive.  In terms of her business decisions, hopefully she won't be like the JC Penny guy by making decisions just because they worked somewhere else.

Update: I've sinced written about the treatment of Marissa by the working mom community here in our Diaries of Small Business Owners series, as it's edged its way into my head.

CNBC Casting New Small Business Show - Could YOU be the Star?

I have long had a crush on CNBC programming since the days of The Big Idea with Donnie Deutsch.  Yes, I was one of the many people who actually stayed home to watch it (pre-DVR world that is).  When we heard that they were casting for a new business show featuring small businesses or family businesses (and giving them $$ to grow & reach their goals) I had to know all about it and of course share the scoop with all of you!

Below you'll find all the show, casting and contact information you'll need to assess whether you're a good fit.

Some things to know:  they are looking for established businesses.  They are looking for small businesses that could use a large cash infusion to help their biz or even take it to the next level.  Sound good so far?  Read on!

The Premise:
Each business will compete to pitch a business plan covering how they would use the prize money and a set of judges will decide which plan and business is most viable.  This business will receive the money.

So how long is your time commitment?
Each episode will feature 3 businesses, and total filming commitment will be spread out over 3 days, which includes a day to compile a background "package" (about you and your biz) and  a day or two for the actual studio shoot. This means you have lots of great opportunities for exposure and a big, public chance to help your company grow.

If you or your small biz pals are interested, please submit the following information:

-       Basic company info (Description, location and history of business)

-       Brief introduction to members involved and their roles

-       Photos of company members

-       Phone number(s), email address, website (if applicable)

-       How would your company use a large sum of money if awarded?

Send all of this information to castingfambusiness@gmail.com and tell them that Sabina from Tin Shingle sent you - they're awaiting your emails!  Go for it!

Why not you? Why not NOW?

We are Tin Shingle!

Hey! We made it to our new name change! You probably read our announcement about it, and then we got some questions from people, so we made a video to answer them. Here's what you'll find in the video:

  • How does this change effect my membership?
  • How will people find us on social media?
  • How do I reach you in general?
  • Are PR Leads and Media Contacts changing?
  • Knowing you two, do you have other cool news? Are the classes changing?
  • Why the name Tin Shingle? It's so different from your other name...
  • Is it a shingle, like, on a roof?
  • The logo - it looks like wood, not tin? Why is that?
  • What is the new main website URL?
  • How do you co-founders Katie and Sabina feel about this change?
  • Do you have a new language for this new name? Like new nicknames?

The "why wood?" question was a big one, so we made another video about that!

What you'll find in this video:

  • The Cliffs notes on how we got the tin concept, and how we decided on wood.
  • The full story. Our BIG 2 requirements when selecting the name for our new name and trademark (hint: Legal + Domains).
  • There really is a tin shingle in Katie's basement!
  • Company names we looked at to discover how they came upon their names: Google, Etsy, and arie.
  • Our inspiration: the Gold Rush era.
  • The phrase "hang your shingle" is one we loved, and how we combined it with tin.
  • Got the name - now starts the visual brainstorming.
  • Sabina's "meh" test
  • Do you need a storefront to have a sign/shingle?

BIG NEWS! Name & Brand Change: Read the Scoop Here!

Hello world!

We have big news to share and we're going to go slowly because we've known about the news for a long time, and all of will be learning about it right now.

Last summer, we received a certified letter, hand delivered by the postman, that challenged our business name. What ensued was a long process of putting our dukes up, reflection, acceptance, putting our dukes up again, reflection again, true acceptance, creative freedom, and an emergence.

The end result?  We are changing our name and completely rebranding - effective now!

Before we tell you the new name, we'll tell you our process of how we got there. We asked ourselves:

"Who do we love?"
YOU! We love creators. We love people who turn ideas into action.

"Who do we serve"
YOU! We serve small small business owners, their team members and staff, and we even inspire those who haven't done it yet, but are planning to in the future.

"How do we do that?"
Here's where we really took a hard look at what we do everyday. Of course we know what we do - we provide you as a member with tools to manage your PR, spread your online presence, get total SEO dominance, connect with other like minded people to get answers you need, and we inspire and motivate you to keep going (blush).

But what does that all mean? We help you share your brand story. We help you get your business out there. We help you get in front of your clients, customers, and new clients and customers to get more sales. We educate, motivate, and help you get the word out about your business.

Alright already, tell me about the new name!!
Ok!  When you went into business, you "hung your shingle". It's an old term that's been around for centuries and was used when someone was going into business for themselves.  Whether it's brick and mortar or virtual, you created a logo and put it out there - your shingle!

You're also resilient. You withstand challenges. You think of how to get a YES when at first you get a no. You don't stop because you love what you do. Ya know what else is resilient? Tin. Yeah, the metal. It resists corrosion and is used as a protective covering to withstand harsh elements.

The New Name Is:
Tin Shingle, LLC

Here is a snippet of our new logo (which you've already seen because you are here at the website):

Curious about why the name? Why the wooden logo? How we feel? We talked about it (via a series of videos) on Tin Shingle YouTube channel - check it out!

When does this happen?
As you can see from the website, the visual change is already underway.   There are also lots of content changes that need to happen to remove the word "preneur" and "preneuring" from the website. We're doing a grand sweep of the content, and then are manually going in to smooth out changes. If you read something clunky, it's because we are still conducting editorial changes.

But that's not all!
There is a big second phase of changes planned, during which we will be making the site easier to navigate and more "on-brand". We are also upgrading sections you love and bringing new goodies to the site that you will love including: Pitch Me and Style Me, where you get to ask producers, editors and stylists exactly how to pitch them, what they love and what they hate (and will have access to reach out to them directly).

From this point on...
What you will see from us in terms of newsletters, Facebook, Twitter, etc., will be Tin Shingle, LLC. We are shinglizing everything ;) and it's effective now.

Serial Entrepreneur & Fitness Rock Star Nadia Murdock's Motivation Mix

Nadia Murdock-Villar

Multi-facted writer and entrepreneur Nadia Murdock has always been passionate about two things in life: fitness and fashion.  After experiencing dramatic fluctuations in weight loss and gain, she made fitness a way of life. With her pulse on what is cutting edge and hot in the fitness industry, Nadia began writing for the New York Fitness Examiner in 2008, the same year she launched her own PR company, Manchester Public Relations, embracing lifestyle and fashion professionals/brands.  Just recently she launched a series of fitness books you can find online HERE that are sure to keep you in share and motivated!

What better person to be the DJ of today's Monday Motivation Mix than Nadia?  She clearly has a powerful mix pushing her!

Hollaback Girl > Gwen Stefani
I will never get tired of this song! I think Gwen Stefani embodies what I preach, “You Can Have It All”.

Watch Them Roll > Sean Paul
Sometimes to release stress during the workday I dance like no one is looking. ☺

Stronger > Britney Spears
I have come a long way since this song was released; this was on constant repeat when I was trying to drop the extra pounds I gained in college. Not only is it a motivational tune for working out but also when I am trying to get a project or writing assignment completed.

I Made It (Cash Money) > Kevin Rudolf
I would like to think I am “making it”; obtaining goals in life should be a continuous adventure. I picture myself singing this song to everyone that doubted me in the past.

Fly > Nicki Minaj & Rihanna
The first few words of this song is so motivational and that’s why I love this song.
I came to win, to fight, to conquer to thrive
I came to win, to survive, to prosper to rise
To Fly

La Despedida > Daddy Yankee
When choreographing steps for my Zumba classes I put this song on for some motivation.

32 Flavors (live acoustic) > Alana Davis
This song is mellow and ideal for unwinding after a long day.

Valentine's Day Gift Guide & Marketplace: Get Your Goods in Now!

Happy almost-Valentine's Day to you all!  One thing we LOVE doing over here is sharing the amazing gifts people can discover for their family, friends, loved ones (and themselves) that are created by small businesses and entrepreneurs.  Katie and I are not only fans of the "Buy Small Business" movement but we're active participants ourselves.  Because of that we've created two ways to spread the small business Valentine's Day love - a curated gift guide blog series (starting next week) and a new marketplace category that is slowly being filled with great gift options.  Read on for more details!

In the spirit of the upcoming holiday and in the spirit of supporting small biz, our marketplace has just launched a Valentine's Day Gifts category that members can populate with must-have presents from their businesses.  Not only will they appear in the marketplace but they'll also be featured in banner ads and we'll socialize the heck out of them on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest! (Not a member? Join here and load up your goodies!)

Next week we'll also be sharing a Buy Small Business Valentine's Day blog series featuring amazing finds from entrepreneurs and independent businesses from around the country.  From gifts for foodies and techies to straight up romantic finds, we'll have it all, and you can feel extra good because everything you buy will be sourced from a small business.  I'd say shopping there means there is double the amount of good karma coming your way!

Until then, buy small and think BIG!

Kisses,
Sabina

Rihanna's Styled to Rock Show Call for Independent Designers: Scoop on Submissions

Confession: I'm a Rihanna fan!  From her music to her signature style, she's often on my radar.  That's why I was pretty pumped when we connected with the team behind her new show, "Styled to Rock" over here at Tin Shingle and are helping them share their call for submissions from designers who would like a chance to be featured on the design challenge show which will debut this year on the Style Network.

The hour-long 10-episode series will give 12 up-and-coming designers hand-picked by Rihanna the opportunity of a lifetime: to create unique fashion pieces for A-list celebrity talent.  The stakes will be high as these budding designers vie for the title of America’s next trendsetting designer.

Rihanna had this to say about the competition: “Fashion has always played an integral part in my life and career so I am so excited to partner with Style Network and share my creative insight with these 12 designers and give them this opportunity to showcase their work."

Rihanna is inviting innovative designers who believe that they represent the future of fashion to sign up to be considered for the new competition series at Style’s website, StyleNetwork.com/StyledtoRock.

So how will the show work?
Rihanna will personally select the 12 designers who will compete for the coveted opportunity to dress some of the biggest names in entertainment.

To help the designers reach their ultimate artistic potential, Rihanna will enlist the guidance of top experts from the fashion industry to serve as mentors.

Each week, challenges will push the designers to their creative limits when they are tasked with styling an A-list star.  Each week’s celebrity guest will determine which designer best achieves their vision – and advances to the next week of competition.

Faced with the threat of elimination, the remaining designers must meet with the mentors to discuss where they fell short and ultimately who will be sent home. In the end, one designer will be named the winner of “Styled to Rock.”

So spread the word all you small biz owners, entrepreneurs and innovative designers!  The next winner could be YOU, and win or lose, the exposure alone could be huge for your brand!

Nadia Murdoc-Villar: You Can Have it All Fitness Edition

We've known Nadia Murdock-Villar when she was still plotting her big dreams of owning a public relations firm, and becoming and author. This new year of 2013 will be big for Nadia, since she has launched her fashion and fittness publicity company, Manchester Public Relations, and just launched the first in a series of fittness books, You Can Have it All. But, when her publisher put her book "on hold", Nadia didn't take note. She went full force with a different way they could publish the book.

Nadia tells us how in our exlusive interview with her:

What inspired you to get started?
A part of me always knew I wanted to be my own boss.  There are two things career-wise that have made me happy and that is fashion and fitness. After giving it much thought and doing freelance work for an extended period of time, I stopped talking and started "doing". I launched Manchester Public Relations, ordered some business cards and put myself out there. I landed my first client a sample sale and that's when I knew I made the right decision by dismissing all the fears that were in the back of my mind. That same year, I submitted my application to write for Examiner.com as the New York Fitness writer. That's how both my passions became reality!

What was your background? Was it in what you were doing now?
I earned my B.A. degree in Psychology which in actuality has really helped me learn how to deal with different personalities and cope with the ups and downs that come with having your own company. After working for a year, I decided to pursue my M.A. degree in Communications with a focus on Public Relations. During that time, my passion for fitness continued to grow and I was self-educating myself daily on nutrition and fitness trends. This led me to write for Examiner.com which enabled me to write my eBook You Can Have It All:Fitness Edition.

What challenge have you had to face that led to a big growth for your company?
After writing for the Examiner.com for 2 years, I knew I wanted to take it to the next level and write a book. I had learned a great deal of information during my time at Examiner.com including interviewing experts, discovering the hottest gyms in New York and gaining knowledge of fitness trends. I wanted share this wealth of knowledge beyond the scope of my readers by writing my book You Can Have It All.

The book was to be published January 2012 in hard copy. Unfortunately the publisher was unable to move forward and it was indefinitely put on hold.  Saddened by this news, I thought to myself: "Well at least I tried," and that was an accomplishment enough.  However, a part of me couldn't just let all my hard work go to the wayside. I reconnected with my publisher and pitched the idea of publishing my book as an eBook, which they loved!  I thought outside the box and didn't give up, that's a lesson I will never forget.

What do you have going on in your business right now that you're excited about?
The first edition of my eBook You Can Have It All: Fitness Edition is now available everywhere eBooks are sold (so exciting!).  In 2013, the additional sections of my eBook, Nutrition and Fashion/Beauty will be published.  I am also focusing on integrating fitness/lifestyle into Manchester Public Relations, which was solely fashion PR when it was originally founded. In addition I recently received my Zumba certification and am working on additional fitness certifications for 2013.

Where would you love to see your business in 5 years?
I would love to grow my company Manchester Public Relations into a non-traditional PR firm which would allow me to marry fitness and public relations.  You will just have to check back with me in 5 years (hopefully less) and see what I have come up with!

Enjoy a Second Cup of Coffee on your Saturday Morning!

Enjoy your Saturday Morning

Graphic Treatment: StudioPixelated

Cheers to your second cup of coffee! Saturday mornings are my sacred times of the week where I work my creative outlet in a no-phone-zone from 9-12am. This was pre-kids, and since kids, has been hard to come by. This year, with one baby almost crawling, and my toddler making tea parties for the Sleep Fairy with a vintage plastic plate set I found for her (for $24 for 28 pieces! #score), I'm reclaiming this time.

For you today, I made this little coffee image and shared it with our Facebook fans for any of our small biz friends who are enjoying the same creative space on a Saturday. It also lives in our Pinterest, as do lots of other delicious coffee photos.

Saturdays for me mean making improvements to the website here at Tin Shingle, or designing a new product for my accessories line at Katie James, my first and most beloved passion project, or writing new blog posts for local bog, A Little Beacon Blog. My resolution this year is to get back into check with this creative side on Saturday mornings. So cheers to you, Small Business Hustler. Let's enjoy another cup. ;)

Julianne Hough & Brittany Snow Wear Small Biz Jewelry to Golden Globes: Exclusive with Designer Daniela Villegas

I'll admit it: My name is Sabina and I'm an Awards Show junkie. From the inspiring speeches I usually cry through to the hot, red carpet fashion and accessories choices, so you can bet I was tuned in and glued to my television and computer when Julianne Hough rocked the red carpet with striking gold (real) beetle and stick bug earrings

Fast foward to the after-parties and Brittany Snow is caught wearing the striking Spartan rings from the same designer.  I knew it was an independent designer and small business owner who had created those stand-out accessories.  As I always say, entrepreneurs make the most amazing and creative things.  I immediately had to know WHO it was, HOW they got their pieces front and center for such a huge fashion moment, WHY she thinks Julianne picked out those specific insects...point being, I needed the nitty gritty details on how this all went down.  Thanks to the wonders of social media and Google I was emailing with lucky designer Daniela Villegas within the hour and she graciously answered all my questions (even my non-business more-Julianne focused ones that I couldn't help but asking).  Check out our exclusive Tin Shingle interview with Daniela below and connect with her online and Facebook as well!

Daniela Villegas Chats Golden Globes, Julianne Hough, Beetles & Entrepreneurship Exclusively with Tin Shingle

How long have you been in business and actively selling your own pieces?
I've been designing jewelry since I was a teenager and I started designing for my own brand DANIELA VILLEGAS since 2008.

What did you do before launching your own accessories line? What led you to decide to hang your own shingle so to speak and launch your own brand?
I started making jewelry pieces for friends and family. I studied fashion design and started learning and working for different people until I decided to launch my own line when I felt the necessity to express myself without constrains. I felt it was time to open my wings and explore.

How important do you think celebrity product placement and styling opportunities are for a fashion or accessories brand?
They are very important because they provide you with the opportunity to reach different markets and possibilities.  However, I feel the most important part is to always keep the quality to the top and to create a piece with perfect balance between creativity and sophistication.

What did you think about how Julianne Hough looked in your pieces on the Red Carpet?
She rocked the Golden Globes red carpet. She is a woman that likes to experiment and takes risks that most of the times pay off, you can see she is comfortable and happy.  She is very well advised by her stylist Anita Patrickson.  At the end the red carpet is an important part of being an actress, she takes it seriously and I'm  sure we'll see her rocking the business for many years to come.

Why did you choose the insects and scarab you did for this piece?
"The Backyard" collection is one of my lines that is inspired in the insects integration and balance with the environment. Every piece has a story and symbolism. The beetles are a very unique animal with an incredible range of colors and patterns.  First, we chose the color that Anita and Julianne had in their minds and everything unfolded from that.

Can you outline how you, a small business owner, were able to get your product on a hot celebrity during one of the most high visibility nights of the year in terms of Hollywood and fashion?
Some luck, a focused effort and in this case it was especially made possible by Julianne's stylist, Anita Patrickson. She is the one that made the connection.

What did you do to prepare your website/social media/customers/etc for the big moment?
We enjoyed having input and interaction with them and via social media.

What advice do you have for aspiring jewelry designers or entrepreneurs in general who may be reading this article?
To be true to yourself, to be congruent with what you are and what you design. To listen to your heart and when you feel is time to fly, do it!  Step by step, no need to rush anything. Work hard everyday and enjoy what you do.

What is your favorite thing about owning your own business?
The freedom I have to create my own pieces, how I manage my time and also the opportunity  to meet incredible people in different fields.

What has been one of your biggest challenges as an entrepreneur?
I feel the biggest challenge at the beginning  for me was to find great people that can help me to make my pieces a reality. I've been lucky enough to work with the best team.

Where would you like to see your business in 5 years from now?
Being represented by more fantastic stores around the globe, to expand on every level.

What other celebrities are your fantasy celebs to have your jewelry adorn?
I would love to see Diane Kruger,  Tilda Swinton, Kate Moss among others,  these are women that are not afraid to experiment and who create their own trends.
