Featured Tin Shingle, Kalyn Johnson

Kalyn Johnson, founder of effie's paperHer weakness is paper. She'll tell her you that her weakness is Hermes scarves, but really, it's the personal touch and visual excitement that paper stationery creates between two people that led Kalyn Johnson, a lawyer by training, to start  paper stationery company, effie's paper.

We'll let Kalyn tell you how she got started, what her biggest challenge has been, and more in our interview with her. And when you're done reading, indulge in her lines of stationery and write someone a thank you note!

What inspired you to get started?
Two summers ago, I was sitting at my desk writing thank you notes, surrounded by stationery, and a light bulb went off in my head.  I guess you could say it was my AH-HAH moment.  I've always loved pretty paper and I've always had a pretty good stash of personalized stationery, but, I didn't have any stationery that made my heart leap. So, in that moment, I decided that I wanted to create my own line of stationery. I wanted my line to be modern, chic and fun. A stationery company seemed like the perfect marriage of my love of all things stylish, pretty paper and letter writing – in that moment, a snap decision became effie's paper.

The company is named after my grandmother, Mrs. Effie Hayes.  She’s the person who helped to foster my fascination with stationery. When I had my AH-HAH moment, the name effie’s paper just came to me.  My grandmother was a very determined and stylish lady; from her I learned tenacity, how mix high and low style, grace under pressure and the importance of sending handwritten notes!

It was as simple as that and here we are a few years later.

What was your background? Was it in what you were doing now?
I am a lawyer by training, but I left the practice of law 5 years ago and started STYLE by Kalyn Johnson, a fashion styling consultancy for busy professionals.  While I love working with clients and helping people look their best, I knew shortly after I started my styling business that I wanted to expand it into a lifestyle brand. I've loved fashion and design since I was a little girl, I guess you could say I took a circuitous route and ended up exactly where I am supposed to be.

What challenge have you had to face that led to a big growth for your company?
Like many small businesses, identifying who our core customer is has been crucial.  When I started the company two years ago, I knew that women would be our core customer.  However, what I didn't do was really drill down and assess "HER" – why she buys, when she buys, who she buys for, etc.  Once I sat down and really analyzed who was buying our products, what she was buying and who she was buying them for I got a lot of clarity about the types of products we should be offering.  This clarity has definitely led to an uptick in sales for us.

What do you have going on in your business right now that you're excited about?
We just launched our OhBaby! collection, a collection of note cards we designed with the modern mom in mind.  I believe that children’s note cards should be modern to match their mother’s sensibilities.  Our collection of children’s note cards are perfect for the mom who’s looking to break out of the traditional mold. And as little something extra, we added Mommy Calling Cards - because whether you work part-time or full-time, or are a stay-at-home mom, every mom needs a business card. Mommy Calling Cards are a simple way to get in touch with other parents you meet. No more rifling through your bag for pen and paper to exchange information.

In addition, the holiday season is huge for us, so we're getting geared up; we've got a line for 'Tweens coming out soon, cellphone cases and a few other goodies . . . Honestly, there's never a dull moment!

Where would you love to see your business in 5 years?
Five years from now, I'd love for effie's paper to be the go-to stationery company for those in the know. Our products are beautiful and high quality, perfect for those who want sophisticated yet stylish stationery. And I'd love for that exposure to lead to the licensing of our designs with some furniture and design companies I admire.  Our next territory is textiles, I am excited about the prospect of seeing our designs on wallpaper, pillows and upholstery fabric.  I think our Anguilla pattern would look really cool on a Kartell Mademoiselle Chair in someone's posh living room or dining room!

Inspire yourself by shopping at effie's paper online!

So. If this is you - please join me on the call today. We will all talk and share ideas of how to best showcase yourself.

We will have this call again in a week or two if you can't make this one, but it won't be recorded, since it's personally tailored to members who call in.

Do You Mix Politics and Business?

A business owner hugging President ObamaSabina was interviewed for this Reuters article to see how business owners handle politics in their business. After the uproar with Chick-fil-A, mixing business with politics became a hot topic: should a business take a public stand or not? Should a business owner make his/her politics known?

As a business, Tin Shingle refrains from taking a stand on political issues, unless it directly impacts our industry and business. However, on a personal note, we do make our opinions known on our personal Facebook and Twitter accounts, which are still viewed by clients and business contacts.

Sabina doesn't mince words or waffle on an issue. She put it clearly in the article: "The older I get, the more in touch I am, the more I'm aware how the political race impacts me. I think I realized the opportunity cost of not talking is far greater than speaking up, and while at the end of the day, I may lose some money, but that's far less of a concern than Obama losing the election."

Well, the cat's out of the bag folks! ;) But seriously, the article weighed both sides pretty well, and interviewed several experts in different industries to get their opinions and how they handle situations. Check out the full article here.

One expert, Rick Scott, assistant professor of finance at Saint Leo University in Florida, brought up a good point, that even if a business does not make public the views of the owner or staff, their views could seep out in other ways. Says Scott: "If I go into a restaurant and it has Fox News on the channel, I'm pretty sure that the owner or manager is a conservative. It they have CNN on, they are a liberal. If they have MSNBC on, they are a socialist. These are broad generalizations, but I always feel it is true."

How do you handle your politics and your business?

Are You Naked?

This week was a total time warp for me. I'm not going to say "time suck" because I spent this week bringing my kids back to healthy (it's not over yet and entailed fevers, congestion, asthma, nebulizers, cooking, cleaning, sterilizing, etc.) and that meant producing a lot of love and patience. But as for work...didn't happen. Daycare wouldn't keep my daughter with a fever and they have a 24hr no-fever policy (as if! kidding, she should have been with her mama).

As a growing business, we're always asking ourselves: "Are we hitting our milestones? Are we executing our ideas?" Usually the answers are: "We hit X milestone!" and "We executed Y idea! Oh, let's back burner Z idea!" And the beat goes on.

After this lost week, I'm realizing that what we also need to be asking ourselves is: "If not, then how can we execute those ideas and hit those milestones?" After a week of not being as available as usual to do what I love, it's time to take a step back and evaluate what's going on. Sabina and I are very into systems. We love creating them, and we know that without them, not much would get done. And yet, with me out of the game, I found myself naked and exposed to what backup was not set up.

For a growing business, you need to build it with you out of the picture. As the business grows, so will your role in that business. It's important to do what you love, and not get too sidetracked in management details. Here are some tough questions to ask yourself, and deliver on, to not only make your backup plan, but scale your business to greater success:

  • Delegate: This is hard for people to do for several reasons. For me, I don't delegate what I love to do. On the flip side, if I'm not available, that work won't get done. And that's no good for anyone. #letitgo
  • Be a Team of 7: Even if you're just yourself, wearing 28 hats, you'll need to scale up quickly if you get super busy, an investor, or even if you're seeking out a small business loan or applying for a small business contest. Angels and lenders want to know your plans for the future, and that you're prepared to let the wind into your sales when you need to. Prepare your business as if there are more people running it with you. Structure your files so that someone can come onto your computer and navigate, or set up a DropBox right now so that should you get taken out of the game, you can hire someone to log into your stuff and access files that need attention.
  • Hold on, I liked that part! I'm starting to recognize a pattern of mine - I hold on to what I like. I like to write. I like to create things. I think that because I can do something means I should do it. So, I keep most of those items on my todo list. That means, no one else knows how to do them. So if I disappear, so do those things. It's even in my personal life - I like to clean. I think I should clean. It's very hard for me to commit to a cleaning person. But, I can't work if my house is messy. I get distracted - and allergic to the dust. And piles of laundry depress me. So when the babysitter is here for my infant son, and my daughter is at daycare, I spend the morning cleaning "just real quick" before my work day starts. Next thing you know it's lunch time, and the day is over.

Have you experienced weeks like this? How did you get through? What did you realize?
