#SmallBizStyle: Simple Sarongs & Purely You Minerals Rock the Handbag Awards Prelim Panel

Being one of the co-founders of Tin Shingle has its perks! These include knowing wow-factor members "personally" (I count e-relationships as personal these days) and being able to spot them in seconds when I see them popping up at different events around my hometown of NYC/Brooklyn that I'm attending.

Today I'm getting a bird's-eye view of the preliminary judging process for the 7th Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards (a member-founded event) and when I arrived I sensed Tin Shingle-ness there...and I wasn't mistaken.  The event was filled with fashion and accessories tastemakers, bloggers and trendsetters and as with many industry events "what's in the gift bag" was one of the first questions people asked after arriving and finding them in their seats.

I'll tell you what is in the gift bags: HOTNESS! I was drooling when I had a peek inside: goodies from Pantone, Timberland iPad cases, Voga Wine, Figenza Vodka, Brother Sewing swag, Rafe (the *independent* accessories designer) delivered some HOT canvas clutches and then (drum roll please...) two fabulous Tin Shingle members' goodies:

  • Simple Sarongs - This Atlanta-based company's towel/sarong combinations in a beautiful print for summer beach and pool trips was a huge hit.  Their "Brighton Beach" print is eye-catching and chic and was quickly trending in the judges' Twitter feeds!  These are definitely something you'll want in your beach bag.
  • Purely You Minerals - Hello, perfect lip color, nice to meet you!  Also, I don't know about you but the thought of putting toxic (!!) makeup on my face freaks me out.  No worries! Their lipstick (and all their makeup) is all good for you! The gloss I'm lusting after from here, the Berry Red, is made from rose bush seeds and other goodies from nature.  Beyond that, the color is perfection.  I recommend you hit them up if you love any of the following: makeup won't harm your face or body, beautiful lips, small businesses or all of the above!

This opportunity and "member mash-up" made my heart flutter for many reasons.

  • Firstly, it was the preliminary judging event of an awards show created (7 years ago) by an entrepreneur and Tin Shingle member that has now gone global and attracts the likes and support of Bloomingdales, InStyle Magazine and beyond.
  • Secondly, today's event featured sponsors and gift bags that were a mix of big names (Timberland, Brother, Rafe) and our own members: this was a major get-in-front-of-people opportunity.
  • Thirdly (and I saved the best for last) these members TOOK ADVANTAGE of this opportunity and leveraged it!  They live-tweeted at judges who were tweeting their goodies, they participated in something that grew the visibility of their brands, and they are now known by some major trendsetters and editors and stylists in the fashion and accessories world.

As a small business you have to screen opportunities when they come up (especially things like giveaways and gift bags) but when a great one pops up you go for it, and then you don't just drop your stuff off and call it a day - you leverage the opportunity before, during and after!

You both did that Simple Sarongs and Purely You Minerals, and for that we salute you!

How Schiffman Creative Landed Press on TIMEMagazine.com for Album Cover Design

Schiffman Creative in Time Magazine

When Erin Schiffman, the other half of the NYC based creative branding team Schiffman Creative, updated their Press Portfolio here at Tin Shingle with the press they landed in Time Magazine, we had to know how she got that!

It was a great press opportunity - commenting on the designs of 9 new musical releases from Justin Timberlake to David Bowie. Turns out,   having an updated website with their design work, client list, and bios was what secured them the gig.

This is a beautiful example of when SEO & PR blend to create a dynamite opportunity to validate a brand, and how it happened while the business owners were sleeping (after they'd done all their hard work of course).

Here's what Erin had to say:

Erin Schiffman"Ok...so here is the story.  I got an e-mail from the editor explaining the piece and asking if we would be interested in being a part of the expert panel.  Of course we agreed to the interview...It is TIMEmagazine.com and it was a really fun story to be a part of!

"After we completed the interview, I asked him how he found us.  He explained that he spent a lot of time researching small creative companies in NYC because he was very specific in what he was looking for.  After doing a ton of research via Google he came across our site.  He said that he felt that we were what he was looking for based on the work we have done and our bios. He also looked at previous companies we worked for, clients for previous and current projects, etc.

"Lesson we learned - very important to have a website, showcase work, include a thorough bio and have easily accessible contact info. I thought the whole thing was pretty crazy especially coming from a PR background.  In my past life, I could have spent months and months trying to get a client a hit like this and the odds of it happening were small.

"....this was [mostly] luck and having a website that showcased our business."

How Not to Fire People - Not the Slaughter House!

J.C. Penney Wounded by Deep Staff Cuts

Every morning during breakfast, before I sit down to my computer, I read my paper - which is currently The Wall Street Journal. In print. At lunch, I step away from the computer, and finish some articles that caught my eye during breakfast.

This morning, my current corporate soap opera had a headline: "Penney Wounded by Deep Staff Cuts". I'm hooked on Penney news. First the plummet in sales after the new CEO decided that discounts and coupons were confusing and a waste of time (he missed this 2001 report about how wrong that was). Then the failed-to-catch-on mini stores within a store - with even more Martha Stewart in yet another big box store (come on Martha, play a little hard to get...plus, her involvement triggered another scandal with Macy's...it's like a scandal within a scandal!). Then the CEO Ron Johnson, a darling from Apple, was let go (or resigned, that's yet to officially come out), to be replaced by the former CEO who he replaced.

And now comes the part when former empolyees spill the beans. So this morning, former employees are dishing on how they were fired - in droves. By the hundreds. In auditoriums.

Johnson, to trim the bottom line, decided that employees who designed one of the the company's most profitable and stable in-house lines, St. John's Bay, which brought in a billion dollars a year on its own, were watching too many videos online.

During the firing spree, which happened across departments of JC Penney, executives were given the news that several of their team members needed to be fired in order to save money on the bottom line. The executives, according to the article, wanted to fire their staff face to face. Johnson and his HR cronies (some whom he brought from Apple) decided that face to face was too costly, and had his people give the executives a script to follow over the phone, or just in big rooms. As reported: "Workers were brought to the auditorium to be fired in groups."

When the $%it hit the fan, meaning, when sales sunk royally, employee morale was low, and nothing was working, Jonhson wanted to resign (according to the article). But JC Penney had no one to replace him with, so he waited two weeks, in which time, the former CEO was approached and jumped at the chance to lead his people again.

What does appear in these articles time after time, is mention of JC Penney's largest shareholder, hedge-fund manager William Ackman. He seems to be the pusher for a greater bottom line, and the pusher for grand cuts like this to employees. Not sure why he'd be OK with a 180degree turn on the customer base, effectively starting entirely over, alienating credit card holders who didn't mind paying fat interest rates each month on their charge cards.

But he did. As did a lot of other men at this corporation that sells to women. It's really quite dumbfounding. No wonder they thought the coupons were confusing. Obviously they don't watch Extreme Couponing on TLC which shows the high women get from a deal.

Oh wait, here's the kicker. I almost forgot. JC Penney is bringing back coupons and sales. So they need more signs in the stores to announce a sale and direct shoppers to sale racks. They used to do so much of this type of printing, that Penney's had their own printing in-house which kept costs down for all of their ongoing, on-demand printing needs. But Ron Johnson fired those guys too. Maybe he auctioned off the printing equipment?

Snagged: Author Mary Elizabeth Webb Uses Her Furniture Experience to Land Real Simple Feature

Tomorrow's Promise is the story of member Mary Elizabeth Webb's tragic past and how it led her to share her journey of faith with the world. But it was her experience working in a high end furniture store as a designer that compelled her to respond to a member's only PR Lead from Tin Shingle in her member account center. The result? The reporter from Real Simple loved her pitch, what resulted was a mention in this Real Simple story. Mary shares with us how she landed this press in our SNAGGED! article series!

HOW MARY ELIZABETH WEBB GOT FEATURED IN REAL SIMPLE MAGAZINE

How often have you been working on your own PR? Either by yourself or someone on your team?
"At least once a week."

What press opportunity did you snag by replying to a PR Lead?
"This lead was not associated with my book/story, but my twelve years of experience working in the furniture industry. I was compelled to answer this PR lead because of my other 'work' knowledge."

How long did the entire process take?
"It took a few weeks, with one phone call interview and then with many email questions."

Can you walk us through the process, from pitch to placement?

"I emailed the lady on the PR lead and she responded to me quickly. She asked to call me a few days later to chat. We did. Then she said if her work was approved by her editor, then it would run in the November issue of Real Simple. It was August when we talked.

"She submitted my answers to the questions and often sent me a clarification email to confirm some things and to ask new questions.
Then a few weeks later her editor emailed me to go over what I had said and add things if I wished.

"She said to look for the article in November issue."

Congrats Mary!

Snagged: Kimmie W. Photography's Father's Day Pitch Takes a Unique Turn and Lands Her a Feature in Beauty News NYC

Kim Washam featured in Beauty News NYCWhen Kim Wahsham, founder of Kimmie W. Photography answered a PR Lead for unique Father's Day gift ideas, she had no idea a PR twist of fate would take her in a completely different direction photographing the Co-Editor in Chief of Beauty News NYC and snagging a feature in their Hot Mama's section.

Putting yourself out there can feel risky but it could turn into something wonderful.

Read Kim's story below and learn more about how persistence and being in the wrong place at the right time can definitely pay off.

HOW KIMMIE W. PHOTOGRAPHY ANSWERED A FATHER'S DAY PR LEAD AND LANDED A FEATURE IN BEAUTY NEWS NYC

How often have you been working on your own PR? Either by yourself or someone on your team?
Since the beginning of my business 2 years ago.

What press opportunity did you snag by replying to a PR Lead?
Getting featured in the Hot Mama's section of Beauty News NYC.

How long did the entire process take?
A couple of months. From the time I responded to the lead, doing the photo shoot and getting into print, it was a few months.

Can you walk us through the process, from pitch to placement?
I sent the pitch in May it was a lead for unique Father's Day gift ideas at Beauty News NYC. It was forwarded to the Co-Editor in Chief and she happened to be interested in updating her headshots. So instead of the Father's Day pitch, I spent the afternoon photographing and getting to know Kim Taylor and was featured in a blogpost in the Metro Mama's section.

Did you learn anything through this process that you can share with other small business owners?
DIY PR is often stressful. It takes time, effort and lots of patience. The moment I felt like I was ready to quit was the moment someone responded to my lead!! It will happen and when it finally does it's the greatest feeling in the world.

Facebook's Limited Reach, as Pointed Out by @BOOOOOOOM

BOOOOOOOM on Facebook's Limited Reach

Hootsuite, our preferred organizer and manager of our social marketing, started a new series highlighting their users and how they use Hootsuite called #MyDash. They featured Jeff Hamada, founder of BOOOOOOM, an online creative archive community, and a place where Jeff can "give people an excuse to be creative, naive or playful."

In his interview on how he uses Hootsuite to manage his Facebook, Twitter and other social outlets, Jeff makes some great points about how he gets the word out, and where he is surprisingly limited:

Facebook.

Jeff says: "I’m frustrated with Facebook because they limit our voice to our own fans. There are 125,000+ fans on the Booooooom Facebook page and I can only ever reach about 15% of those people with a status update or shared link. That means there are over 100,000 people who don’t see updates from me, people who actually joined because they want to see art in their feed. The only way for me to reach more is to pay Facebook to promote each post. This just isn’t possible for someone like me."

Jeff is also inclined to like Google Hangouts. Google approached him to use and cultivate BOOOOOOOM's Google +, and it paid off. He went from 300 fans to 150,000 in less than a few months.

About Google Hangouts, Jeff says: "The users aren’t as active as they are on Facebook yet, but the potential is huge considering how many people use Gmail or Google products in their daily life."

What about you? Are you using and liking Google Hangouts? And are you liking Google + ?

Do Friendship & Entrepreneurship Mix: Lessons Learned While Growing a Business

When I first contemplated writing this post it was going to be in the form of an apology to my dearest friends who patiently dealt with "Business Sabina" over the past (nearly) nine years as I navigated the world of launching and running one, and then another small business.  If you haven't done it yourself I can only describe it as falling into a black hole in which time passes at warp speed, and you emerge a few years later wondering where the time went, and at times, where your personal life went as well.  I called my businesses my business babies, explaining to friends that my "children" were keeping me too tied down to emerge from behind the glowing screen of my laptop.  While reflecting on my experience, I decided instead to share my own story along with a case for maintaining a strong personal life (despite whatever you're doing work-wise) along with a bit of a tip sheet to those of you who may be entering the launch process.  In fact, I'd read this and reflect on it if you're already knee-deep in your business as you may be making the same mistakes I did when I neglected those who matter most.  I know it's not always easy to balance personal and professional but perhaps these ideas will help you as they still help me!

I used to think that choosing work over friendship was just how it went as a small business owner.  I will admit that I became slighlty obsessed with my business and its growth (which was natural I suppose) but thinking about some of my one-liners back then makes me shudder:   "I simply do not have time for a personal life or friends" I would lament.  "If I'm leaving my desk it's going to be to make business contacts not to gab with girlfriends."  "Sorry (insert any friend's name here) I'm just too busy to see you this week/month/quarter." I was as unreliable as ever when making plans, I was virtually impossible to get on the phone, and soon those plans were made less and less often.  Fast-forward a few years and I realized that I was not only disconnected from my friends and some of my family more than ever, but I myself had forgotten how good and healthy time with friends sans work talk was.  I needed to give my brain, body and business a break.  And so began my humble return to my true friends who, despite my lack of availability for years welcomed me back with open arms.  (Thank you June, Amanda and others for your patience).

I'm now "back on the wagon" and I make my personal life a priority and I make time with my friends (and other non-work activities) as much of a To Do List item as are my Quickbooks and client billing.  As my mom used to say while we were growing up "If momma isn't happy nobody is happy" and I believe the same goes for business!  If you aren't happy, balanced and personally fulfilled leader your business will never reach its fullest potential.  It's one of the many reasons we are launching a Holistic Business Platform here at Tin Shingle this spring and summer (more on that soon).  The truth is, a one-sided, business-only life turns you into a one-sided business only person. Your mind, body and ultimately your business will suffer!  That said, it can take energy and a conscious effort to do this, but don't worry, I've created some helpful guidelines to remind you why it's important and help you do it!  Feel free to print them out and paste them over your desk, which I'm sure you sit at too often just like I still tend to do from time to time!

THE CASE FOR MAINTAINING A STRONG PERSONAL LIFE

  • Think of your personal life/health/mental well being as glass balls, think of your work life as rubber balls. You're always juggling (I hear you) and it's hard.  But if the rubber balls get dropped they will bounce back and all will be well.  When the glass balls break they are very hard to put together again in the same way.  They crack, they shatter, and this impacts the entire juggling process.  You reall need to get this concept.
  • Do you great ideas in the shower?  Get ready to have your mind blown in regards to the amazing ideas you'll get when you are hanging out with friends or others who aren't in your direct sphere of work!  Whether from directly talking to them about work or just letting your work thoughts marinate somewhere subconsciously, sometimes the moment your "work brain" rests (just like your body after a hard work-out) amazing solutions and ideas appear.
  • Work will not be your bridesmaid or groomsmen at your wedding.  Work will not bring you soup when you are sick.  Work will not hold you when your parents are sick or dying.  Work will not tell you that yes, that outfit does make you look ridiculous.  Work will not love you regardless of what television show you appeared on/how much money you make off a deal/how big a splash your launch made.  And as they say, at the end of it all, nobody on their deathbed says "Man, I wish I networked and worked more".
  • Finally, a promise to you:  your work will get BETTER the more you put your personal life at the top of your To Do List!  Since adding things for me to my daily routine, I'm happier, healthier, awesome ideas are popping up like crazy, I snap at peoples less (yes, I do that sometimes), heck I even met the man I'm going to marry after pledging to have more of a personal life.  Magical things happen when you make yourself and your non-work life a priority.  You know what didn't happen?  I didn't lose momentum, I didn't lose clients, I didn't lose ideas and most importantly I didn't lose my mind!

So you're probably wondering, HOW do I manage work AND a personal life?  Here are a few ways I "make it work":

  • They say you lose weight and exercise when you make an appointment at the gym and stick to it.  Do the same things with friends.  Schedule it into your weekly calendar like you would a work appointment and do not miss it.  Force yourself to do this, as after a couple weeks of "friend time" it will be a habit you do not want to give up.
  • Make a friendship plan!  I'm not kidding.  Kindly, carefully and honestly have a face-to-face (or Skype, or FaceTime) chat with them explaining your crazy work load, your fears as a new (or experienced) business owner and that sure, you may not be as available as you used to, but that you still love and cherish them.  Try to find solutions you can all agree upon because you value them and want to "make your friendship work".
  • Honor your friends.  Stop thinking they are expendable, that they will be there for you when you're "ready for them", respect them and value them.  At the end of the day they're always going to be better for your life than clients. Sorry, it's just true!  Imagine your life without them. Imagine what would happen when your work buzz died down and you looked around and were all alone.  Not fun, eh?  Try that every time you plan on standing your friends up for work...
  • I personally have a hard time with the "no smartphones or Iphone checking all night when with friends" rule.  So instead, I excuse myself once an hour or half hour and quickly check emails etc.  It's more realistic for me and it prevents me from getting twitchy or distracted when chatting with my friends.
  • Open up about work with your friends.  Open up about your needs, ideas, campaigns, struggles, problems.  I'm not saying dominate every night out with YOUR work issues, but you'd be surprised at how an outside perspective can shed light on an inside work issue.  This happens to me all the time!
  • Bring your "civilian friends" to work events when it's appropriate.  When I say appropriate I mean bring them when you're going to be able to give them your attention and have fun with them, not when you're going to be too busy working a room or the actual event (though sometimes it IS fun to let them see you in action, just make sure they have a sidekick of their own there).  I can't tell you how much fun it is to go to work parties with "my girls and guys".  I enjoy them more, I relax and sometimes they are the BEST "work wingmen"!

Finally, embrace the fact that you can't do it all, you won't always do it right and you'll drop balls from time to time.  Just be sure that those glass balls I spoke of earlier are given extra TLC.

Editors note:  Please do this! Even while posting this I was became a little verklempt thinking about how lucky I am to have a strong circle of friends who support me, make me laugh, and love me for me, not my business. I wish you the same!
