Interview with Footzyfolds on How They Thrived During Startup Years

Sarah and Jennifer Caplan, co-founders FootzyFolds

We knew Sarah and Jennifer Caplan when they were Footzyrolls. They've been members of Tin Shingle for years, and then suddenly, we saw the CNN article about their lawsuit battle with Tootsie Roll, after Tootsie Roll filed against them alleging trademark infringement. What happened in the end was that Footzyrolls agreed to change their name to Footzyfolds. How's that for a packaging and website nightmare? But by then, the co-founders and sisters were small business veterans, who founded their shoe company in 2009, and by this time had passed $2 million in sales. They navigated their toughest challenge with grace and smarts. We chatted with them about how they survived and thrived through their start-up years.

When you first started your business, did you have to quit another job?
When I first started my business, I did not quit my job.  I was working full time at JPMorgan and my sister was full time Footzyfolds  I quit my job only after I reached specific milestones and goals that I set out to accomplish for the business.  I did this for myself to know that in my mind it was a legitimate business and required me to give it my full time commitment.   Some of these goals included; Getting into Oprah Magazine, Selling to Bloomingdale's, and reaching a certain sales goal.

What was the pivotal move to you starting your business?
When I looked everywhere in the marketplace for the product that I wanted and I couldn't find it.  I believed there was a need for my product (footzyfolds) and no one else had created the product along with the marketing around the concept of being able to put shoes in your handbag to take with you at all times as an extra pair of shoes.

Why did you know this business was the right thing to start?
I didn't know it was the right thing to start, I took a risk and worked really hard to see where we could take it.

Can you share with us some super-star moves you made that improved your business? Anything specific, like a type of marketing you did, branding, packaging, partnership, etc?

Sarah Jessica Parker FootzyFolds packaging

Every single encounter we had with our business, from hiring/firing, making mistakes to making good decisions to collaboration, marketing, packaging, etc got us to where we are now. There was not one specific thing because everything we did was a learning experience which helped us be ready for what was next (even though we didn't know what was next).  One of our greatest partnerships was with the Sex & the City 2 movie.  When the ad agency for Warner Brothers called us to collaborate for the movie premiere, we felt like we really made it!   Having a picture of Sarah Jessica Parker on our Footzy packaging was an amazing feeling especially because they PAID us collaborate!!

Did you have a family at the time of launching your business?
Yes, my husband was very supportive when I launched my business.  He only saw the back of my blackberry for months on end but he is very understanding of what my goals are as an entrepreneur and he was there with me packing boxes and helping out where he could (in his spare time).

If you have a family now (husband and/or children), how has a growing family impacted how you run your business, or what you want from your business?
The business required me to change my priorities in my life for the first few years while trying to grow the business.  For example, my husband and I stopped taking vacations and holiday time (Thanksgiving- Black Friday) was spent working at Bloomingdale's to sell shoes, etc.  Your life changes to accommodate your business needs but you don't think about what "you are missing" when you are launching in order to try to grow your company.  If you aren't willing to give up vacations and family time then I think it's difficult to be successful at the beginning. Of course once you have a more established business and can hire more employees there is opportunity to enjoy the success more, but by then I'll probably be on to my next venture!

Have you launched other businesses or ventures since launching this business?
Yes, my sister and I also launched a company called CHARMZEEZ while we were running Footzyfolds in 2010.  We created charms that hung and clasped off of Sillybands, hairbands, backpacks, shoelaces, etc.  We invented the product but chose not to try and create our own distribution channel in the toy industry.  We knew how hard it was to create Footzy distribution and we were not in the capacity to run a toy company at the same time.  Therefore, we licensed this product to a large toy manufacturer.

Why do you think your business has succeeded during its first few critical years?
We have succeeded for a number of reasons:

  • We never took "no" for an answer.  Even if a buyer tells me "no" that just means NOT RIGHT NOW.  I listen to why the buyer is telling me "no" and I continue to figure out how to turn that into a "yes."
  • No matter what bad situation we found ourselves in (manufacturing, inventory, lawsuits, etc) we always figured out the best solution for us and kept the monetary impact as low as we could.
  • Mistakes will happen but it was how we learned from them that helped us be successful
  • We continue to innovate and make our product better.  For fall 2013, we are launching the most comfortable cushioned insole I have ever felt or seen.  Even though our flats have the functionality to fold, we continue to make our product better in any way that we can because now we compete with everyone in the market that makes shoes.

Thank you Sarah and Footzyfolds for sharing your experiences with us!

How Baby Gear Company, Nomie Baby, Succeeded in the Start-up Years.

Nomie Baby

Katie DanzigerKatie Danziger, founder of the nationally recognized baby gear brand Nomie Baby, was a former marketing executive who left the field when she had kids so that she could spend more time with family and to volunteer. But her business brain kept on ticking, and after her third child, Katie was so motivated to solve a problem she had when her littlest one spit up in her car seat, that she developed the first removable, washable, spill-proof car seat cover. That was in 2007, and by Memorial Day 2008, Katie had launched the website to sell the car seat covers. Nomie Baby has exceeded its expectations in sales and reach, being a must-half for hundreds of thousands of parents, and selling in boutiques around the country, and big box stores like Bed Bath and Beyond, some Buy Buy Baby stores, Walmart.com and Diapers.com.

We chatted with Katie about how Nomie Baby has thrived during its startup years:

When you first started your business, did you have to quit another job?
No

What was the pivotal move to you starting your business?
I had an "ah ha" moment that others also agreed it could work and could believe that it didn't exist already, so step by step I developed the Nomie Baby car seat covers.

Why did you know this business was the right thing to start?
I knew that I wasn't the only one with the messy problem of cleanup after my little one's car seat, and after searching online and coming up empty and sharing the idea with a few close friends who all said, "Oh I wish I had that!"  I knew it was a must-have for all parents.

Can you share with us some super-star moves you made that improved your business?
Letting go of things that others could do better, and faster, which allowed me to focus on the things that I can do and enjoy.  Realizing and accepting that it's not only OK not to do everything myself, but it's actually good business sense to delegate to others with expertise!

Did you have a family at the time of launching your business?
Yes, 3 kids and a husband who were all incredibly supportive and great cheerleaders.

How has a growing family impacted how you run your business, or what you want from your business?

It has forced me to use my time more efficiently, so when I am working I am making the most of my time, and when I am with my family I can really be with them.

Have you launched other businesses or ventures since launching this business?
No.

Why do you think your business has succeeded during its first few
critical years?
Because Nomie Baby products really are must-have products that are reasonably priced, easily accessible and I have stayed focused on a few products.

We at Tin Shingle are proud and happy to see the success of Nomie Baby as the business continues to sustain strength through the years. One practical need sprouted a great idea which allowed Nomie Baby to kick off thriving.  If you are wondering why every mom needs one, especially if you have kids who suffer from car sickness, make sure you get a  nomie baby car seat cover here.

#SmallBizSpotlight Featured Member: Kimberly Petruska

A former decorative painter with experiencing creating personal art for wholesale and licensing, Kimberly Petruska’s latest venture has her using her creative flair to put a new spin on the world of love and dating with her company, DatingAccessory, After re-entering the world of dating only to discover that technology had changed the way people communicate with one another, Kimberly founded DatingAccessory to “modernize” Cupid and give people a new way to connect and relate. With DatingAccessory, a mobile friendly dating website, members give our "You Caught my Eye" dating cards to someone that catches their eye, and the adventure begins! In this way, people are connecting with confidence and creating possibilities---all while using their love affair with technology to set off sparks in real life! Read all about Kimberly’s evolution from artist to creative matchmaker.

What inspired you to get started?
I started the DatingAccessory because when I wanted to start dating again, I found that people never approached each other. This started a fascination in how people relate to each other and how technology changed how people related in real life.

What was your background? Was it in what you are doing now?
I have been an entrepreneur my whole adult life, but I had another company before starting the DatingAccessory. I had a decorative painting business, Kimberly Petruska Designs in which I painted murals for clients. This led to creating gallery items and personalized art for wholesale and licensing. I paint more for charity now at different pediatric centers.

What challenge have you had to face that led to a big growth for your company?
While it is very easy to explain and understand our product, we still have to get the word out and show people how it works. Since it is a new way to connect, this is a challenge. We have gotten creative and planned "Matchmakingfests." These events allow people to use our products and gain brand recognition, while singles have a wonderful fun day meeting other singles.

What do you have going on in your business right now that you're excited about?
I am excited to be speaking at iDate international dating conference in Beverly Hills in June. This year's Matchmakingfest is very exciting and will teach us how to become bigger and better next year with plans to expand to different markets.

Where would you love to see your business in 5 years?
By 5 years we will have "Matchmakingfests" and events in every major cities and globally. We will have global brand recognition and will be creating possibilities for singles everywhere!

#SmallBizSnacks: Hudson Henry Baking Company Turns Sabina into "One of Those People Who Like Granola"

Until this past week I wouldn't have had much to say had you asked me what I thought about granola.  In fact, I didn't think much about it at all.  But with the arrival of a couple new granola companies to the Tin Shingle community I found myself on the receiving end of two bags of the oat-y snack from Hudson Henry Baking Co. yesterday afternoon.  Within five minutes of its arrival (hey, I was hungry) I was re-thinking all my previous assumptions about something that I'd previously assumed was what healthy people tried to trick you into thinking was a "fun treat".  This stuff is addictively delicious.

Before you even dig in you'll see that their packaging and branding is beautiful! Heralded as Good News Granola, the twelve ounce bags that arrived at my place were Hudson Henry's Handcrafted Granola with Cashews & Coconut and their Maple, Pecans & Coconut flavor.  I spent a good few minutes eating while standing over my desk - I was "comparing and contrasting flavors for editorial purposes - and I'd made my decision by the time I'd swallowed my first couple handfuls.

My assessment?  If you're a granola lover already then let your fingers fly over to the Hudson Henry's website and snag some ASAP.  The way the pumpkin seeds, maple syrup, oats, brown sugar, sea salt and coconut oil all blend together is unreal.  If you're not a granola lover see this as your chance to become one.  I did and I now have to hide the bag from myself like I do cookies.  That said, unlike most boxes of cookies, I can actually read and understand the ingredients on this container, I love the small business story behind it and the product is perfection!

Snag your own Hudson Henry Granola on their website and be sure to follow Hope and the whole team on Facebook and Twitter!

Entrepreneurs Hoped to (and DID!) Beat Economic Odds

Entreprenerus hope (and did!) Beat Economic odds

Sabina and I were adding press links to our Pinterest press page, when I re-read this 2009 article at Reuters by Ellen Wulfhorst "Entrepreneurs Hope to Beat Economic Odds", which included several friends of Tin Shingle. Part of working our magic here at Tin Shingle is pitching stories to editors, with the meat of those stories being anecdotes from small business members at Tin Shingle. These anecdotes then serve as  examples and lessons to other readers and business owners. This article came from one of those opportunities.

Gemma Redux

Right out of the gate, the first line of the article described a somber scene from the life of jewelry designer Rachel Dooley, founder and lead designer of Gemma Redux: "Rachel Dooley quit her high-paying job as an attorney a month ago to launch a jewelry business, and her friends think she is crazy."

But guess what: She wasn't crazy!! She listened to her gut, took a risk, and worked hard every day to stay on track and grow her business both creatively and strategically. Today, Gemma Redux is a major brand that has a cult following of customers and can be seen on celebrities including Blake Lively and Jessica Alba (and I could go on and on).

Nomie Baby

Inspired and hooked, I continued to read. BAM, there was another business still in business: Nomie Baby founded by problem-solver Katie Danziger, who hit their best sales year yet last year, selling thousands and thousands of car seat covers through different sales channels including Diapers.com, Walmart.com, Bed Bath and Beyond. A feature on the Good Morning America landed the then 4-year-old company into a happy tizzy of orders.

Fretzels

Oh, and it doesn't stop there! Jill Frechtman of the addictive chocolate covered pretzel company, Fretzels, is still feeding our chocolate cravings. Said Jill: "I could close up the business and then try and find a job that I don't necessarily love or I can ride out the storm and see how it goes." She's ridden out the storm, and continues to get Fretzels into new stores.

And as for SheFinds? Oh yes, they are still very much in business. As an internet magazine, they developed all sorts of different revenue streams to channel into their trusted brand. As for the then-beta company, It's All About Aging founded by Anne Maxfield, you might say it became all about something else...food. While developing the brand to help people with their aging parents, Anne was also quite passionate about locally grown food and how to cook it. Her blog posts on recipes were actually some of the most popular on her Aging website. Anne is another example of someone listened to her passion and developed a brand out of it, which is how The Accidental Locavore was born. It can also be found on Huffington Post.

To close this reflective article, I'll leave you with this quote from Rachel, as it is the bottom line every day for entrepreneurs and business owners. And to know that she overcame it, despite the fear, should give us all confidence:

"Watching my friends' careers go up in smoke and watching tons of people getting laid off gave me the strength," Rachel said. "I thought, 'Who knows when that's going to happen to me?'"

But does she panic? "Probably once a day," she said. "Looking at my bank account and seeing this is where we're at, and the only way this grows is if I do it, it's daunting."

Keep calm and shingle on, entrepreneurs and dreamers. Shingle on.

#SmallBizStyle: I Spy with My Little Eye...Several Amazing Independent Brands at Once!

Because co-founder Katie and I work together virtually, we're constantly in communication via phone, text, email, GotoMeeting, Skype...you get it.  Often our emails and texts are peppered with images of what we're up to, cool small businesses (or hanging shingles) we discover when out and about, and other daily visual updates.

When Katie sent me this particular photo I loved it and knew I had to share it via a #SmallBizStyle post because it feature so many small businesses creations that we love all in one image!  I've broken it down below!  Enjoy!

Top to Bottom:

1. Katie in her Bolbach Designs Rosie the Bulldog Tank:
As someone who also wanted this cute (and supersoft) tank from designer Jess Bolbach the moment I saw it (and also has a dog-crush on the real life Rosie the bulldog), I can attest that it's the perfect top for summer: it's fun, you can wear it to Pilates one week and with a skirt the next (been there, done that) and it's only $14.00.  Enough said.

2. Minted's Cute New Stationery Options:
Ah yes, my Save the Date propped up on Katie's makeup table is one of the other things I love in Katie's photo.  But even more exciting for you? All the #SmallBizStyle  invitation options that are pouring out of Minted.com! Whether for a work or personal event, they not only sell scores of cards and invitations from small buisness owners and independent designers, they support them even more by hosting conte like this!  Of course, Minted is also run by entrepreneur Mariam Naficy, who you should definitely read about here.  As an aside, they also have the world's best customer service (I've even talked to a live person on a Sunday).

3. Visionary Necklace, Accessories Inspiration from Teich:
I know the Teich boutique team well and I love that they're a classic mom and pop shop in every sense of the word (run by Mom, Dad and sometimes with a cameo from baby) and they sell some of the most amazing and stylish finds for him, her, the kids and the home.  I have literally been staring down and crushing on this Visionary necklace (made from old records) for years, and recently got one for Katie and one for me.  They're like our small business best friend necklaces : )
