Katie Fairhurst & Valerie Eidson, Kavatee
The designers behind hot, new accessories collection and the the Neckalinas reveal what keeps them motivated and working the long hours the fashion world demands:

1. Tonight's the Night > Outasight
Such a fantastic beat and helps us to CHASE after the dream!  This song just ROCKS and gives you the feeling you can do anything.

2. Take Care > Drake (featuring Rihanna)
This song keeps us in the zone and keeps the confidence alive!  We heart Drake!

3. Juicy > The Notorious B.I.G.
This is an oldie, but goodie.... this song just makes us feel good anytime! If you especially listen to his lyrics, he came from nothing and raps about his uprising!  Amazing.

Pamela Pekerman her website HERE
It's nearly impossible to keep up with the pace on-air accessories expert, brand spokesperson and accessories trend spotter Pamela keeps, which made us wonder what music is pumping through her headphones when she runs around New York City from sun up to sun down...

4. 9 to 5 > Dolly Parton
I find it funny that I am “the man” “the boss” and still I want to impress myself, work hard for myself, and continue to find my voice. This song also makes me realize how lucky I am that my hustle dance is all for me. Both Success and failure rest on my shoulders.

5. Be Optimistic > Shirley Temple
It's a very simple message, but we can all use a motivational reminder now and again. What better and sweater way than thru the voice of a child?

6.  Accessory > Jordyn Taylor
This pumps me up during market week, when I go on the hunt for the latest accessory so I can share it with everyone via an upcoming segment, tweet update or event.

Nadia Murdock, Manchester PR
The life of a PR maven is nonstop, but these tunes keep Nadia motivated to keep moving through the world of public relations...

7. Countdown > Beyonce
There is something about Beyonce and her music that makes you feel like you can have it all, true sense of female empowerment.

8. A Real Hero > College
I fell in love with this song after seeing the movie "Drive" with Ryan Gosling. I can totally get lost in the lyrics, I also love the 80's vibe that it gives.

Wendy Armbuster Bell, Snugabell Mom & Baby Gear
From TV appearances to retail outreach to participating in the hot topic conversations about the world she works in at Snugabell, Wendy relies on some Lenny to keep herself going with the flow...

9. Fly Away > Lenny Kravitz
I can't help but sing along which gets my toes tapping, my hips swaying and my blood pumping!

Alexa Carlin, Hello Perfect
Not even 21 and already running more than one brand?  In college and hosting your own radio show? How does she do it?  One thing that keeps this powerhouse college-preneur going is music...

Take Over the World > Kidz In the Hall
This song gets me inspired and motivated anytime I listen to it because it really expresses how there are no limits in life and if you dream it you can do it.

Being an Entrepreneur is NOT an Excuse for being Unhealthy!

There are several awesome common threads that run through entrepreneurs I meet, personality-wise.  Most of these characteristics I admire, but one that runs through a few too many stories these days is the story of small business owners who have been letting themselves go in the self-care department - from not carving out time to exercise to not creating strategies to ensure they eat healthy meals.  Those habits are why we at Tin Shingle encourageme you to run a "holistic business".  Making time for yourself, your health and keeping the machine that is you running well and optimally is a must as an entrepreneur and is the only way your business will run its best as well.

Do you feel like your own health and wellness plan could use some tweaking?  Fear not!  We connected with Shannon Roberts of fitness coaching team Team Fitini and she gave us some advice on how all of us can be sure we keep our health as in line as we keep our books!

By the way, after you read her tips, check out the Team Fitini Instagram, it's inspiring and will help you keep your business and body in shape!

Blinded, Dark Google Search - What Will We DO Without Keywords?

So Google removed most keyword data from your stats. Which means that you can't see what keyword phrases people are typing into Google that lead them to your website pages. You can see them from Yahoo and Bing, but most people use Google, so we're $*it out of luck. And must now work blindfolded.

Wondering WHY Google did this is pretty pointless, but my guess, different from others who think it monetary and it very well may be, is that the Google search pros are tired of playing whac-a-mole with spammy websites and an SEO industry that has created a commodity out of "keywords". People spend a lot of money to find keywords, use keywords, measure keywords, and a lot of the time, these "SEO Firms" are just jerking around, sending clients Excel spreadsheets of numbers that mean nothing to the common person, and I'm going to go with the belief that Google spam fighters are tired of it.

With that out of the way, it doesn't help those of us who know how to

  • A.) Market content to those searching for it
  • B.) Write content based on what people are looking for - giving them answers. Being the answer. Honestly and blessedly. You're looking for something, you don't see it in search results, so you click on page 7 of Google and you finally find it? Guess what my job is: seeing your search term, and tweaking a page on my existing website that better answers your question, and better ranks my page to maybe page 1 of Google, and thereby helping more people like you.

But. That's not going to happen anymore. Or not as easily So what do we do? As of this day, I'm currently pondering that. Here's what I'm thinking:

  • Don't dive into Google Adwords. That industry is currently populated with several firms who can totally rob you blind, maybe charging you too much for clicks, or mis-advising you. It could get a lot more polluted very quickly as some SEO articles are concluding that keyword answers are in Google Keyword data.
  • Still don't dive into Google Adwords as a Keyword Tool. The keyword search tool in Google Keywords has always been a little lame. Maybe it's great for businesses marketing generic products and services, but usually, the money is in the nitty gritty keyword terms. What I mean is, people search for something VERY specific. And hundreds of people may not be searching for that VERY specific phrase. If a page on your website happens to deliver the answer to this phrase, and if it's clear to your new reader how to buy what you sell, then BAM, you just got yourself a conversion. However, Google Keywords don't include these low hanging fruit type terms.
  • Use Google Adwords Wisely. I'm not saying don't use Google Adwords. The digital search and recommendation industry is moving to a pay-for-play model (someone has to bring home the bacon, right?). But when you do it, do it right. Be very involved with the ads being written for you, and demand results - good and bad results. Google Adwords is something you will tweak on an ongoing basis.
  • Write Authentically. As an SEO strategist, this has always been the game I played: creating authentic content that normal people want to read and get a great take-away from. Even though we'll be shooting in the dark about which phrases people are dying to know the answers to, keep on writing and producing good, unique, content.
  • Don't Replicate Content. Always been a bad idea, and now, as people dive into more content marketing, if your article is picked up by 5 websites (because that's what's going on these days with content syndication and websites getting paid for your content), just be careful how or how often you use those guest articles to link back to your website.
  • Squeeze Your Stats: If you sell content, Erika Miller of Independant Fashion Bloggers wrote a great article on how to squeeze out some measureable data from your Google Analytics.

So much to write about. This is just the start. At Tin Shingle, we created a platform that helps business owners with their pr, and also with creating an authentic content marketing platform. We've been using it for years, and it's a genuine way to tell your brand story. Look into it, and keep your browser bookmarked to Tin Shingle as we explore how to work blindfolded and still see conversions.

Onward!

#SmallBizSpotlight Featured Member: Deanna Montrose

I have a little confession to make...as a result of intensively working on a nonprofit construction project, I have (almost) man hands.  Yes, it is embarassing; they are dry, tired, sometimes even cracked, and I am sure aging at some horrible speed.  Who of us though, has time EVERY week, let alone budget allowance, to make a spa appointment, clear our schedules, drive to said spa, and be pampered?!  Help is here...Deanna Montrose, creator of gLOVE Treat, has developed a miracle product for all of us busy entreprenuers, moms, and superwomen!

gLOVE Treat is a paraffin wax treatment for hands and feet that is efficient, effective, and affordable.  Did I also mention it can be done in the comfort of your own home!? The new unique technology allows the paraffin formula and essential oils to penetrate deep into skin providing a stronger moisture absorbtion and amazing results.  Montrose has over 20 years in the beauty industry owning multiple succsessful  salons and spas through the years.  She also has been educated around the world by Vidal Sasoon, Jingles, and Bumble and Bumble.  Deanna now shares her drive, dedication, and journey with us shinglers in this weeks #SmallBizSpotlight.

What inspired you to get started?
Deanna Montrose, salon owner and creator of gLOVE Treat I have been in my industry (Salon and Spa) for over 25 years.  The paraffin area of my industry has always driven me crazy.  A cumbersome pot, with long melt times, and in order to keep it sanitary you need to ladle into gloves...which is quite messy.  For the last 5 years I had thought there must be a better way!  Three years ago I began working on a solution.  We just received our patent and we are quite excited!

gLOVE Treat uses all natural ingredients and essential oilsWhat is your background?  Was it what you are doing now?
My background is I am a licensed Cosmetologist and Salon Owner.  I have owned Salon/Spas most of my career which has been 25 years.  So this was a  part of what I do in the salon.

What challenge have you had to face that lead to a big growth for your company?
To create gLOVE Treat, there have been many hurdles due to the fact that this method has never been done before.   I am quite wise to ingredients and what was needed to create a wonderful skin treatment, but to produce the glove and figure out the method was quite difficult.

I also wanted a safety mechanism so I could be ensured that our customers would always have a safe experience with the treatment.  gLOVE Treat heats in a microwave in 2 minutes, so I began a search for the best system to sensor our heat.  I own a salon and work full time, so all of this was done on my "free" time.

Finding manufacturers was also complex, as no one had made this product before.  Through research, much travel and testing, we had gLOVE Treat after 18 months.  Our current hurdle is getting the word out and creating a sales stream.  We are excited and have launched on hautelook on June 15th, so we are truly just growing.

Paraffin treatment glove for hands. gLOVE TreatWhat do you have going on in your bussiness right now that you are really excited about?
We are putting together a team of sales reps to move our product though our industry.  We also are working on putting together our own factory.

Where would you like to see your business in five years?
I would love to see my product in salons, spas, nail salons, resorts and brick and mortar stores throughout the world.

The 5 Products That Will Get You Into Your Skinny Jeans (All Created by Entrepreneurs)

I have a confession to make: I think I've gained nearly five pounds in the past month.  I know.  That said, I would like to think I have a valid excuse: I got hitched, and after months of pre-wedding "get it right and get it tight" workouts, cleanses and uber-healthy eating, I spent our first month of marriage "celebrating" with my new husband Mr. H. Celebrating meaning: welcoming every celebratory glass of champagne, every scrumptious carbohydrate, and every dessert into my life, guilt free.  At the same time, I may or may not have neglected my hardcore fitness regimen I'd fallen so in love with pre-wedding.

That all stops today.  Not only did I feel awesome (and less stressed by the way) when I was working out regularly and eating healthier, but it's fall which means it's "denim weather" and I may soon snack myself right out of my skinny jeans, so it's time to pull the plug on my "we just got married", free-for-all lifestyle. But I can't just bid adieu to my carefree attitude from the past month without a little bit of support.  Getting up early for the gym isn't always easy nor is giving up dessert cold turkey!  Fortunately there is still hope for my return to "Fit Sabina" thanks to these entrepreneurs who created five products guaranteed to help keep people (like me) on the right track.

From fitness inspiration to food, check out these new healthy living gamechangers:

Half of getting to the gym, okay nearly all of it for me, is a mental game.  So is much of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Words to Sweat By knows this and is built around it - they provide clever and motivational work-out accessories, from towels (see above) to t-shirts to jewelry!

I try not to drink my calories, but with no soda, no aritificial drinks or drinks with sugar in them and no wine (okay, less wine...) I'm left wanting something fun to drink beyond my 8+ glasses of water.  Enter Drink Chia! an Omega-3 super foods drink infused with chia seeds, b-complex and antioxidants created by a marathon runner and mother of two (phew).  Simply writing about it makes me feel healthier.  On top of that, it comes in what I like to call "designer" flavors that I'd want to drink on purpose: Lemon Blueberry, Honeysuckle Pear (!!), Strawberry Citrus and Mango Tangerine. On top of that there is no gluten, caffeine, sodium, cholesterol or artificial anything in it!

Check them out online and snag a sample pack here!

All this talk of not eating has made me hungry. Good news for me, I can still have my salty, sweet and peanut-buttery snacks and live guilt free!  How?  YummyHealth, founded by Lisa Goldbaum, a company that creates healthy versions of classic and beloved snacks.  Sure, they're aimed at children and are working to do their part to fight the childhood obesity epidemic, but after one look at their online store I knew they were suitable for my cravings as well! After you order your favorite goodies, read founder Lisa's message, what an inspiring entrepreneur!

One awesome thing about my rekindled love affair with fitness (that took a short sabbatical this past month) has been how much fun I've had discovering new work outs, gym classes, fitness DVD's and ways to get in shape.  It prevents me from getting bored and keeps challenging my body.  That's why when I heard about the Dream Body workout series, from Fusion Fitness and founder/creator Darby Brender I was actually looking forward to trying it out.  Another bonus?  You can burn up to 700 calories a DVD.  Hello!  Even if you haven't gotten back together with working out after a long break up, you can force yourself through a DVD when you know that's going on!

When I saw this final, innovative, healthy lifestyle MUST-have I thought, "they have created this with yours truly in mind."  That said, portion control is something most people find tricky - and often what leads to weight gain.  How  many of us truly know and can plate up one serving of wine, cereal, protein or carbs?

The innovator over at Elegant Portions realized this and solved the serving dilemma by creating discreet, stylish, portion-tracking plates, bowls, wine glasses and more.  I love them because they give my brain a rest as they eliminate the thinking, measuring and weighing that goes into healthy eating!  My brain has enough going on in it as is, and I don't want to add internal debates about serving size into it!

Like all the other products in this story, Elegant Portions was created by an entrepreneur (this genius idea can be credited to founder and creator Gail Curtis) who is passionate about helping others lead healthy lifestyles!

#SmallBizStyle: Rainy Day Must-Haves for Fall Showers, Make the Gloom Work for You!

I, personally, am quite the opposite of a "Rain, Rain Go Away, Come Again Some Other Day" kind of girl...I actually love a rainy day!  I think they are the perfect excuse to hunker down at home, get some work done ( this gal loves gloomy day blogging), read a bit, watch a movie and savor the excuse to stay indoors!  That said, cocooning up at home isn't always possible and neither is walking around in full-on rain gear from top to bottom, so what's a girl to do?  I'll tell you what: say thank you to the entrepreneurs featured in this Bad Weather Small Biz Style edition who create beautiful and practical wares to do everything from accessorize you to protect your accessories from the elements.  Snag them now, and when the next fall rainstorm hits you'll be jumping through puddles in style...#SmallBizStyle that is!

Clockwise from Left:

1. Weather the Storm Necklace, from Peggy Li Jewelry: As seen on Lucy Liu in the hot, new show Elementary, this piece is the perfect accessory for a rainy day. $59.00.

2. Grace Carter High Heel Shoe Cover: Dilemma: you want to wear your lucky "power heels" to a date or meeting but it's pouring rain outdoors, what do you do? Grab these protective heel covers from Grace Carter and be on your way! Slip them over your shoes when you're out and about and then slip them into your handbag (they provide the case for 'em) when you reach your destination. I personally love the leopard print style (in my wardrobe, animal print is a neutral) but they offer other styles and colors as well.  Oh, and did I mention these babies were selected as the best travel accessory of 2012 by Travel + Leisure Magazine? Enough said!  $59.00

3. Big Feet Pajama Company Hooded Footie PJs: Okay, I admit it.  When I'm curled up at home writing blogs and watching  movies during said rainy days, I'm not always in full makeup and "daytime apparel".  No, I love to savor the forced time indoors in something super comfortable, including pajamas that keep me warm from top to bottom, like these footie pajamas from Big Feet PJ Company.  It's basically an entire outfit in one, from shoes to hat.  It's also totally acceptable to answer the door for the take-out dinner you "cooked" while wearing it.  Just saying... $49.00

4. Coiffie Hair Protector: As much as I would like to lay around in my footie jammies all day long, many a rainy day requires me to head out into the real world.  This often presents a problem for me as I wasn't blessed with "perfect girl hair" that remains lustrous and "in control" the moment even a hint of humidy hits the air.  That said I can't just slap it into a bun and call it a day and I refuse to put a plastic bag over it and show my face in public.  Thankfully I don't have to do either thanks to Coiffie, and their water repellant hoods that keep your hair safe and dry while preventing anything close to "hat hair". $55.00

And there's more!

I think umbrellas are highly under-utilized accessories.  We know we'll be using them several times a month (especially during the spring and fall) yet we invest so little thought or care in them.  Hopefully hot, small business Persole will change that for you. The women behind this breakthrough accessories brand have done a few things.  At first glance you may look at their "shades" and like me, think, "How gorgeous and adorable, even the handles pay major attention to detail" like I did...But that is not all folks!

These accessories protect you from the elements like none other, and you will not just be using them during the rainy months.  These are actually all weather shades that protect you (and your precious skin) from UV rays (these babies provide 50 SPF) when it's sunny and the rain and snow during bad weather.  They're super durable, 100% waterproof and yes, they'll just make you feel good when carrying them, come rain or shine!  The style choices they also have are endless, meaning you can pick one out that will make you wish for rainy days!

Tin Shingle In USA Today - Talking Social Media & Small Business

Extra, Extra! Read All About It!  This past week I had the pleasure of sharing some Tin Shingle-approved tips with USA Today regarding  small business owners, and how (and why, really) they should make time for social media in their own businesses.

Over here we are big believers that the "big three" most businesses need include Facebook (a business page), Twitter (for your business) and LinkedIn (often a personal LinkedIn is a fine way to get started).  Sure there are others you may already be using or considering using like Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr and more, and by all means if they're a great fit for your business you go and use those, but we really believe the three mentioned above are non-negotiables!

Read the USA Today piece for our advice, and see below for more of our recommendations! And while you're reading USA Today, notice their  USA Today Small Business series in general as a go-to resource for you. Scroll down below to get a few more or our "truths" and tips regarding your business and social media, and to get your hands on a few podcasts that will help you as well!

Social Media & Small Business Truths:

1. Yes, you must have a Facebook page that is for business and not use your personal page for this (besides, do you really want business colleagues having access to all your and your family/friend's photos?).

2. Yes you should invest in Twitter, and you should post/reply/check it a couple of times a day.  Not investing time into getting to know Twitter means you won't be learning about how to reach out to press, cultivate powerful media relationships, connect with customers and more - all of which you can do on this free platform!  I promise you, it may feel like a strobe light now or a monster that needs feeding way too much, but it WILL get better and when you understand how to unleash it's power you'll thank me ; )

3. Yes you should have a personal LinkedIn page that highlights your business skills.  This is not a place to talk about your family and your favorite foods. This can be a powerful space to connect with potential partners, investors, cross-promotion partners, colleagues in your field and more!  Be sure yours is always up-to-date (I check weekly!), linked to any blog or Twitter feed you want to share, has your contacts readily available and even houses a professional photo of you!

4. No, you should not leave your social media posting to an intern/assistant/son or daughter/etc. until you really understand it yourself!  This is your company's VOICE online, it is a representation of your brand and business.  Not only do you have to craft it and decide on a strategy and flow that works for you, you have to be sure that people are connecting with your brand and business ethos and spirit!  Until you decide what that is, how can you teach it to anyone else?  Start out doing it on your own, create a "handbook" as to how your posting schedule and strategy should look and then perhaps we can talk about you passing the job along to someone else!

5. Yes, you do need to check into your feeds regularly.  And post regularly!  Social media is a constantly flowing river and if you only post once a day or once a week your posts will be missed by most. Also, when people get to your page if they don't see it actively connecting with people they'll be less likely to invest their time into attention into it.

6.  Yes you need to stop being a wallflower while making sure you don't become a much-too-chatty-Kathy!  You need to be a person at the social media party that people want to speak to! That means you should:

  • ask questions
  • curate information that people who are into your business would be into (not just information about you!)
  • share images
  • share quotes or other inspiring bits and pieces and...
  • really have conversations with your followers!  That way, when you want to share a promotion or sale, or ask them to do something, you're sure to be speaking to an engaged bunch of listeners!

7. YES we have podcasts you can download that can help you!  Here is one you can access right now!

#SmallBizSpotlight Featured Member:Emily Elizabeth Kolins

Emily Elizabeth Kolins, Owner and Creator of Emily Elizabeth Jewelry

If I were a movie producer, this girl would be the "girl next door" and the "star of the show!"  Emily Kolins is not only amazing, smart, and successful but, she is one of the sweetest people I have met. (You will agree by the end of this interview!)  She started her business, Emily Elizabeth Jewelry, in 2006 with just a few pieces in her first collection.  Now, in 2013, she has been featured in MANY magazines (Seventeen, Redbook, and Shape), on many celebrities (Lauren Conrad, Vanessa Hudgens, and Jaime King) and yes, even landed her own trunk show this November.  Kolins, in part, credits this journey and success to the encouragement and support of family and friends.  Emily's collections have now grown to include bridal selections, charity pieces, as well as gift sets.  The most amazing part of her success (to me anyway!), is the balance, stability, and maturity she posseses as a young entrepreneur.  We can gain from her wise advice yet again, this time in her #SmallBizSpotlight below.

All Aboard Necklace Trio from Emily Elizabeth Kolins

What inspired you to get started?
I graduated college and had no idea what I wanted to do with myself but knew I needed to do something that I wanted to do. Thankfully I had parents that agreed that while being an entrepreneur AND in the arts field would be difficult, if I worked hard and put my heart into it, I would be at least OK because I tried.

What was your background? Was it in what you are doing now?
I have no "background" in fashion, business or PR. In college I studied English and Art, and when given the choice, took collectives like painting and poetry. Probably the more meaningful background I have is being "artsy" since childhood and always cultivating my artistic expression. It also helps that my parents both worked in the New York Garment Center in the 70's. While they were both buyers, fashion and knowing trends IS in the genes!

What challenge have you had to face that led to a big growth for your company?
Balancing business life and mind with my personal life has been a challenge. It's easy to technically shut off your computer or smart phone but distancing yourself completely to give you, your family, friends, pets and partners the love that's deserved can be hard if you're being consumed by your business and unfortunately as entrepreneurs know, there are times when not being consumed is impossible. Over the years, and with the help of my fiance, I've learned to devote time to the people and things that matter. The things that I couldn't live without (I could live without my business!) and make sure that I'm "good" because if an entrepreneur is not being good to themselves, the business will at some point suffer.

What do you have going on in your business right now that you're excited about?
Clover Convertable Headbang, Bracelet, Necklace from Emily Elizabeth JewelryI'll be holding a truck show at the Lilly Pulitzer store in Hackensack New Jersey on November 23rd 2013! It was such a cool surprise when they reached out to me about collaborating together and I'm super excited about it!

Where would you love to see your business in 5 years?
In 5 years I hope my business is in a good enough place (as well as me!!) where I can balance home and business, putting family life first, and Emily Elizabeth Jewelry second. While I want to be a "full-time mom", I hope I can continue my business, shifting it to a side business. I hope that it not only provides me and my family with some extra income, but also gives me an outlet to still be creative with some "me" time.

Step Away From Your Desk: How to Leave Work for a Couple Weeks and Really Leave

Over the past year something amazing happened to me as an entrepreneur and businesswoman.  Sure, I planned a wedding and got married, but professionally speaking, thanks to the wedding month(s) I learned two major lessons:  How to Strategically Plan for Time Away from Work, and How to “Safely” Disconnect from Work and Enjoy it!

As a business owner, especially when you have a less than twenty person company, day-to-day your business survives and thrives because you show up, physically and mentally.  For many of us who do take time away for vacation, or a life-changing event like say, a wedding, when we do leave the office physically, we’re unable to allow ourselves to fully disconnect and relax.  I can't tell you how many family trips I've been on (long and short) during which I'd find time to check in via the computer or phone at least once a day, and during several of those trips I also had a my iPhone within arm's reach at all times "just in case".

When I began planning my wedding I knew that had to change.  The week of and the week after had to be dedicated in a large part to all things family, wedding and bridal.  Though the thought of doing that scared me in the beginning, I'm happy to report that I did it, and by doing it I learned some lessons that I hope to share with you, because as business owners we should all be able to disconnect and allow our companies to go on functioning without us, or pause until we return (whatever is best for you, you do).   You see, chances are high that life won't let you simply go on working at an entrepreneur's pace without interruption. It simply doesn't work that way.

We know this about life, and how it can be filled with moments we need to step away from work (vacation, family needs, illness, crisis, time to reboot) yet we often become addicted to being present.  We forget how to disconnect.  Sometimes as small business owners we even consider overworking to be deserving of a badge of honor.  I'm not saying hard work and perseverance aren't essential to your business success but there are two problems with being unable to fully disconnect from time to time:  it isn’t always going to be possible and it isn’t healthy in the first place.

That said there are solutions, systems and strategies entrepreneurs and business owners can begin putting into place now which will allow them - when the time comes for time away (for pleasure or otherwise) – to ensure their business can continue in whatever way is best.

"PUT YOUR PHONE DONE AND STEP AWAY FROM THE DESK"... HOW I MADE IT HAPPEN:

If you do not already have one now, begin working this week on an Operations Manual for your Business:
This should contain the "hows" (in specific detail) to run different parts of your business.  See it as a training manual of sorts, and something your employees, an intern, an assistant or someone you hire to fill in for you can use when you're away.  It will save you time when you do have to leave, and help keep people clear and organized in terms of all orders of operation.  Save this in Google Docs (even if it's in print as well) so you always have access to it from anywhere you are!

Create a "Weekly Musts" List of Everything That Must Happen During a Normal Week
Sure, in every business random things pop up and you're putting out fires right and left, but I'm guessing that every week you do specific things at specific times.  Make a list of that, by day, time, task and be specific.  This way whether you have a planned or unplanned leave of absence you already have your essential weekly to do list work ready to be tackled.  Save this in Google Docs as well so you always have access to it from anywhere you are!

Who is "Understudy" - Make Sure They Are Ready to Go
When a play hits Broadway (or even community theater) the most essential actors and actresses roles have understudies - fill in actors and actresses who are ready to take on the role should the stars not be able to go on.  Your business needs an understudy - especially if there are only a few of you filling multiple roles. Sure they can't do it as well as you but they can help guarantee some of the essential tasks that keep your company moving will be completed, emails and phone calls will be answered and your business doesn't come to a halt.  Depending on your type of business these could be freelancers in your field, hourly employees, assistants, other members of your team or even people who own businesses in your field of work who "get" what you do.

Be Honest: What Does and Doesn't Have to Get Done
When I first planned my wedding time away I had a massive list of things I wanted to have others accomplish for me when I was gone.  I was so afraid of losing momentum and wanted the massive to do list I go through every day to be done by other people.  Thankfully, my business partner (try business soulmate) co-founder Katie reminded me that many of those tasks could be done upon my return.  Not creating descriptions and detailed lists about how those items should be done by other people saved me time, and let me save those tasks for myself when I returned. BONUS POINTS FOR ME: I returned to those tasks with a fresh and re-energized brain and they turned out better than ever!

Put Away the Badge of Overworking:
That's right - I know we all want as many pats on the back and badges as possible but there is something not quite right about celebrating the fact that we cannot take time out of our business to enjoy life.  Isn't that why most of us started our companies in the first place?  To be in control, to be our own boss, to make life better?  Could our never leaving our computer or desk be hurting our businesses and brains?  Is your inability to never step away from your desk really a sign of success?  Hmmmm think about those questions for a few minutes...

Believe me, I know (I know too much!) how hard it is to step away from work.  It's hard enough for me to leave my desk for a coffee break let alone leave work for more than two days - ven for my own wedding.  But I did, and had I not, I'd have regretted it for a very long time.  Begin preparing your business now for days when it will be running without you.  It will sometimes have to run without you!  Work is not life, it simply isn't.  You cannot attach a U-Haul to your hearse to show off all the "stuff" and badges and success you had as a business owner.  It's all important, don't get me wrong, but it will be there waiting for you when you get back from doing things for you and your family from time to time.  And if that doesn't convince you to give yourself the ability to step away, let me promise you that when you do come back, your brain will have had some R & R and will be firing on all cylinders and creating ideas and strategies only a rested brain can create!

"It’s beautifully made and very delicate. I love it, love it, love it!"  "Yoola is professional, creative, accommodating, and makes excellent products. This is so unique!" "The necklace is an absolute dream, so delicate and beautiful. I know it will draw attention everywhere I wear it."  I can't agree more. Yael Falk, founder of YoolaDesign, produces some of the most delicately chic pieces that tuly inspire enchantment.  She learned the basic technique of wire crocheting in Montreux, Switzerland and began developing unique designs.  Soon YoolaDesign was born providing exquisite pieces of art, including bridal jewelry and home accents. She now is based in Isreal, and has even began sharing the art of this technique with beginners and artists alike, through workshops, jewelry making kits, and wire crochet patterns.  We are privileged to share in Falk's inspirations, challenges, and dreams in this weeks #SmallBizSpotlight.

What inspired you to get started?

I started crocheting with wire about 7 years ago; I was relocated for a period in Switzerland and finally had time to be creative for the sake of it. It’s one of the best things that ever happened to me (except of course of my hubby and kids…). I fell in love with the idea of using such fine wires to create volume designs.

What was your background? Was it in what you are doing now?

I am a trained Industrial Designer, and have always being working as one. I combine both careers and each one fulfills my creative soul in their different ways.

What challenge have you had to face that led to a big growth for your company?

I faced a challenge a few years ago that actually become a huge positive impact to me sales.

I nurtured a fear that by sharing my knowledge on-line would decrease my finished items sales. On the other side of the scales, the idea that a design I developed on one side of the planet, will be prepared on the other side, profoundly enchanted me.

In the spirit of a global and green village, and in order to enable people to own pieces they cannot afford unless they do them themselves, I decided to go forward. The first educational PDF (decorative pomegranate) I edited was a big success, many orders immediately started coming in, it was a truly enthralling experience.

I continued writing more tutorials, offered various e-learning combinations and so on. My shop was flourishing unpredictably; my fear that finished products would sell less because of the DIY option appeared to be unnecessary, the patterns sale actually gave a boost to my finished items.

Some people would purchase both finished pieces of jewelry, and the instructions on how to make them, as well as other items in the same transaction.

What do you have going on in your business right now that you're excited about?

So much is always going on! There are great dynamics with Yoola! I'm always on the hound for for new jewelry lines, new DIY instruments after all I am an industrial designer ...

Also, I have encountered new business opportunities, and I'm really excited to move my workshop to a new larger studio.

I always keep in mind this adage that if you don't move forward, you'll end up going backwards. I don't move, I run !

Where would you love to see your business in 5 years?

I would love to see my finished items in more galleries, I would love to see my educational products and tools in shops as well, maybe partner up with a bigger player...

More than anything else, I want the future to bring me surprises (good ones) and take me to places I wouldn't even dream of....
