Motivation Mix Monday: Member Mash Up! Tunes Pro-PRENEURS Use to Keep Going!

Music is a powerful thing.  Just like athletes gear up for big sporting events by playing certain songs, entrepreneurs often gear up for their days and weeks with specific songs that make them feel extra motivated, positive, pumped and unstoppable.  Every Monday we bring you a new "guest DJ" on the Motivation Mix Monday decks who shares his or her motivation set list.  This week as a special treat we're presenting our first "Member Mash Up", sharing some of our very own Tin Shingle members and the songs that help them carry on.  Perhaps some are similar to yours, perhaps you'll discover a few new tunes to add to your Monday morning set list. Get to know them below!

As entrepreneurs we are often marching to the beat of our own drummer or a one man (or woman) band, and that can take a lot of energy, faith, hope and motivation.  So use these tunes as an extra injection of just that, and when all else seems to be bringing you down, take a break and as Gaga would say....Just Dance!

Tenacious B

We used to have a Jack Russell Terrier named Rosie (aka Boutros Boutros Gally, Agent Han Ratty and Rose Monkey among others– don’t ask me why). She was just such a little fat furry ball of sunshine! But give that dog a toy and she turned into a completely different animal. Within minutes she could ravage a squeaky toy, completely demolish it, put a hole in the squeaker, pull all of the stuffing out and leave the toy lifeless and limp on the floor. To watch her do this was quite funny actually, she would attack it, bite it until she found the squeaker and then she would squeak, squeak, squeak it until she made a small tear in the casing. Then, she would grab the toy and shake it – not just with her head, but with her whole body. After that she would grab the toy between her two front paws and rip and tear and chomp and shake again until she had gotten the thing open. Once the ‘belly’ was exposed, she’d dig deep and pull stuffing after stuffing after more stuffing until finally the squeaker became free at which point she would bite it until it ‘died’.

On those days, we called Rosie “Tenacious B”.

I’ve been reminded of Tenacious B while I’ve been out on sales calls these last few days and I realize that I learned a lot from my little dog.

When it comes to getting yourself in front of a customer or closing the deal, it really pays to be tenacious. I left corporate America six months ago thinking that it would be easy to pick up clients.  I had a good reputation, had done great work for clients in the past, had a ton of contacts, etc… I was a little unprepared for what I really needed to be successful in my ‘new job’. The skill set that you need as an entrepreneur is decidedly different than the one you’ve developed as an ‘employee’. Learning how to do The Hustle is paramount. And you can’t just do The Hustle once; you have to keep doing it again and again and again. But sometimes you get tired, or feel a little dejected, or question whether these potential clients are even getting your emails or your phone calls. And that’s when you have to dig deep and tap into your inner Tenacious B.

I’ve been courting one old client of mine since the day that I left corporate America and finally, last Friday, they gave me an opportunity to put together a proposal for a new project for them. I had a week to prepare (when typically it would take a few weeks to put something like what they were asking for together). And it was a total long shot – they were asking four other companies to bid on the project as well. I could have taken the easy way out. I could have declined. I could have put something together and sent it via email or followed-up with a phone call. And that's normally what I would have done because that's what I'm comfortable with.

But being an entrepreneur isn't about being 'comfortable' and building a business requires that you push yourself beyond your own envelope. Getting this piece of business was important to me. It not only represented income, but more importantly, it was a good strategic client that I could have on my roster and it was with people that I really liked working with. So I did what Rosie would do. I went after my squeaky toy and flew out to LA.

But as the entrepreneur with nothing to lose who looked at this trip as an investment in my business, I didn’t just stop there. I booked my flight with a stopover in San Francisco so I could visit a client’s booth at their biggest convention of the year and meet some of the team face-to-face for the first time.

And I didn’t stop there either. I sent a note out to another old client who had relocated to a new company out West to see if we could catch up and ended up meeting with her and another person on her brand team.

All told, I saw nine people who could potentially work with my company either now or in the future. And it wasn’t that scary. Once I made the decision to fly out to LA, I had nothing to lose by trying to pack in as many customer visits as possible. And they say that for every nine ‘No’s’ you get one ‘Yes’. So if that’s the case, I’ve already guaranteed my next deal!

So, I just advise you when it comes to sales and new customer acquisition, be ferocious.  Be a Tenacious B.

How to Use SEO to Spread Your Cyber Monday or Black Friday Sale

Cyber Monday preparation for SEOWe're helping you prep for your Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales on your website, and the most important thing is to lay the seeds early!

Sabina wrote a great blog post about how to market your Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales and capitalize on each sale for future sales. This post is about how to spread your message in the search engines, aka SEO. And you definitely need to start early.

According to my brain, and confirmed by Google Trends, a tool created by Google that shows how many searches occurred for a phrase throughout the year, searches for "cyber monday" and "black friday" start in October, quickly build into a spike through November, and end December 1st. That means that the searches are going on now as I type this!

Google Keyword Trends results for Cyber Monday

As you can see from this chart from Google Trends, interest in Cyber Monday is growing. Searches for Black Friday follow a similar growth pattern:

Google Trends report on Black Friday

Your goal? You want your website included in these search results. When someone types in "cyber monday", you want Google and other search engines to serve up your website in their list of recommendations. Here's how you're going to do that:

Publish a webpage or blog post about it 3 weeks out: Google and other search engines need time to "index" the content on new web pages. They've gotten very swift at doing this, and can do it in a number of days, but you want to give them time to find yours. Remember to include "cyber monday" or "black friday" (whichever sale it is) in your title, plus other special words that you are selling, like "pink earrings" or "sexy sunglasses". People get very specific when they search online, and this is your golden opportunity to deliver your gem.

Spread the wealth, post your sale on other websites: Here at Tin Shingle, we know you need multiple angles to accomplish your goal (to get more sales). That's why we encourage our members to post their sales in our Events Calendar. You will want your sale to appear on other websites as well, such as this one. Why? You want to claim as many positions in the search engines as you can - as long as they all point back to your website for the shopping to make their purchase. If you're website isn't strong enough to claim a high ranking, a larger website might be.

Go for the "long tail": What the heck is a long tail, you ask? Sounds silly, I know. It's an industry term for "really long keyword". For example: I'm focusing on the term "cyber monday". But, you're not going rank #1 in Google, or even probably on page 3 for the term "cyber monday" alone. Competition for that term is too high - there is too much history published already. Plus, you don't want to. It's too broad. You want a focused search. A search from a person desperate to find what you sell. A "long tail" keyword is a phrase that has additional words in it, like "cyber monday chocolate sales" or "cyber monday pumpease coupon".

Let's break each of these terms down:

  • "cyber monday chocolate sales": this would be typed in by a person who does not know about your company, but wants to buy chocolate on sale during Cyber Monday. Cha-ching! Enter you. In this case, enter our member Simply Sweet Arrangements, who is having such a sale! If Simply Sweet Arrangements wrote a blog post about their Cyber Monday sale, with links and pictures and other SEO goodness, they may show up in the search results for this term. They also posted their sale here on Tin Shingle. A person may see that as well, and even though they are getting Tin Shingle, they are linked to Simply Sweet Arrangements to get their chocolate fix and party favor ideas. Same goes for any blogs that include Simply Sweet Arrangements in their shopping guides.
  • "cyber monday pumpease coupon": This term would be typed in by a person who knows about the company that designs stylish pumping bras. They are looking for a coupon, and they're figuring Pumpease is offering one for Cyber Monday. And they are right! Pumpease also posted their sale here on Tin Shingle. That doubles their chances of coming up in search results for that term.

Now that you have your marching orders, let's go claim some Cyber Monday and Black Friday searches! Remember to use your most special, descriptive keywords to help people find you! You may have pictures on your website, but search engines and people need to read the words describing what is there!

And, if you want to get listed in our Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping guide, or any other round ups we feature, read about our special Event Listing benefit, and get yourself a ProPreneur membership today, and get these and other business tools to help your business succeed on many levels!

Black Friday, Cyber Monday & Your PR and Marketing Campaign, Must-Knows for Big Sales

It’s no secret that the retail world has been dealing with a lot these days.  Whether you’re a “big box” retailer or a small business, whether you're selling online or via a brick & mortar store, you’ve no doubt felt the blow of the depressed economy.  That said, despite economic woes, shoppers will be lining up virtually and braving the cold weather in “real life”  outside of stores to kick off the holiday shopping season during this month’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales . This means that if you are a small business that doesn’t have thousands (to millions) of dollars to spend on advertising these sales you’re going to be relying on things like do-it-yourself public relations & marketing, social media and perhaps your company’s newsletter to get the word out about your sale.

Before doing any more sales strategizing, be sure you review these tips in order to maximize yoru Black Friday and Cyber Monday buzz, and create some new and return customers in the process!

Prepare NOW:  If you don’t know what you’ll be discounting or selling via your Cyber Monday or Black Friday sales, prepare now.  This means getting the copy ready for your website, your newsletters and the press who may be asking about your deals; prepping and testing discount codes (you don’t want any mistakes costing you sales on the big day) and checking to be sure your inventory, packaging and all else is ready to go!

Double Discounts Opportunities for Future Sales
:  Once a customer enters your virtual or brick & mortar store they’re already telling you they are excited enough about your product/store to check it out, and that’s when you hit ‘em with discount #1, the specific Cyber Monday or Black Friday discounts you want to share.  But don’t stop there!  Encourage future sales by creating a second discount code or gift certificate that shoppers will receive after their purchase.  This can be sent via email if you run an e-commerce site or via a physical voucher if you are in a brick & mortar store.  This is a great way to capitalize on all the web and foot traffic coming into your store, and to begin creating a long term relationship with future and current customers.

Make it a Triple (Sale), Tell a Friend:  Everyone loves telling their friends about the great deals they snagged or are planning on snagging during the post-Thanksgiving shopping frenzy.  Remind your customers to tell a friend about your upcoming sale or make it easy for them by allowing them to share the sale directly from your website or via a promo card they can pick up at your store and physically give to a friend.  Your newsletter (if you have one) should also have a place they can forward the message along to a friend.  It’s human nature to want to share great scoop or news, so make it easy to share news of your sale, and you could snag even more sales!

Flash Sales within a Sale:
Ready to really kick it up a notch?  With the help of social media and a few properly placed pitches, you can really rev up sales by running flash sales throughout the day on specific items that come and go, thus creating a sense or urgency to BUY NOW!  An example?  What if Tin Shingle member Object Mythology discounted all her cozy alpaca gloves throughout Cyber Monday but from 12-2 pm only she did an additional discount on her infinity scarves.  People who may have been on the fence would have extra incentive to buy, before the sale ended.  Perhaps propreneur Simply Sweet Arrangements is doing a day long free shipping sale from Black Friday through Cyber Monday, but on Monday from midnight to 12 noon she also did an additional 25% off all orders.  That’s extra incentive to buy!

Socialize your Sale:
Help your message go viral by buzzing about the sales you’re offering leading up to the big shopping days and then throughout the shopping weekend via your company’s Facebook & Twitter.  This will help news of your sale go viral even faster!  If you’re tweeting your sale, be sure you check out which hashtags are trending in regards to Black Friday & Cyber Monday, and include those hashtags on your tweets!  Want to up the ante even more?  Include a SPECIAL bonus (maybe a free shipping offer, early access to sales or an extra ten percent off) for your loyal social media followers!

Pitch, pitch pitch – to the Right People!
Keep in mind that the stories going up about Black Friday & Cyber Monday are short lead stories – this means they will be appearing on television, websites, blogs, and some newspapers.  This is not the time to be pitching long lead outlets (monthly magazines) because these editors are already planning spring issues.  Instead, reach out to the outlets (especially large blogs and websites) that match the niche of the product you’re selling whose readers or viewers would be interested in your product.  This is also a great time to send your sale information to experts and shopping gurus who regularly appear on television talking about these types of sales.

Finally, look for opportunities to share your sale via pr lead generators such as HARO and the Tin Shingle PR Leads.  Members of Tin Shingle can also post their sales in our Events section, which we will “socialize” via our website, newsletter, Facebook & Twitter, and pass along to any media looking for Black Friday & Cyber Monday sales information!

Be Honest about your Fulfillment Schedule:  Several of your customers will be purchasing their holiday gifts via your sale.  If it will take you 2 weeks plus to fulfill their order, let them know prior to them purchasing your item.  There’s no sense in generating lots of sales if you’re also going to generate angry customer responses!  The best way is through a forewarning and honesty.  Speaking of order fulfillment, make sure you have an internal system in place, should you need extra hands on deck to man orders and shipments!

Despite the economy, the shopping "show" will go on, and you want to be sure customers looking for a great deal and a great gift find you, get to know you and continue to shop from you!  Follow our tips, plan ahead and use this Black Friday & Cyber Monday time to build retail relationships with customers for now and into the future!

Author Mary Elizabeth Webb on Self-Publishing

Editor's Note: Mary Elizabeth Webb is one of those women who doesn't know the meaning of the word 'No'. She has been taking the bull by the horns following the self publication of her book, Tomorrow's Promise and is WORKING IT up and down the east coast to promote her message of hope and faith. She is truly an inspiration and we all feel lucky to know her. We caught up with her to ask her about her experience with self-publishing and to share with us some tips and inspiration that we could share with you.

Mary Elizabeth WebbI never imagined it would have been so difficult to catch the eye/ear of a traditional publishing company. I wanted desperately to have my story picked up by one of the hundreds out there, but it was daunting. The majority of major traditional publishing companies work in conjunction with literary agents. I decided after ten years of writing proposals and rewriting them over and over till I got perfection (and only getting ‘your story does not fit our needs at this time’ letters,) that my story was too inspirational to keep it to myself.

The key to getting noticed by either is writing an excellent query/proposal. It has to exude amazingness if you aren't a celebrity or the cast from Jersey Shore or if you haven't had a mysterious homicide movie like drama just happen in your life. These companies and agents are looking for the bottom line--SALES. No matter how well written or great your tale may be, if they don't see it being an excellent seller, then you get the "your story does not fit our needs at this time, but continued success in your publishing quest" letter or email!

I went with self-publishing. I went with a well-known traditional Publishing Company, who just opened a self publishing division, because they saw the need for that area. There are too many authors who wish to get published, who may have a good story and even lots of money to drop down on their dream.

Self-publishing is basically where the author pays for everything. The only problem I found was that if you have an unlimited budget, then you may be able to succeed and get noticed. I did not. I had the money to produce/edit the book, but then any publicity/websites/promotion/marketing (which is how your book gets noticed, so you can sell them) is another chunk of money. I could not invest any more cash in that area and took it upon myself to do what I could to get my story told. That is how I found tinshingle.com. It was a great place for me to find great connections all over the media industry. I love the hope and inspiration they have given me and my dream. I didn't become an author for the fame and notoriety, I just felt I had powerful message to share with the world and just because I couldn't hook the major publishing companies didn't mean I wasn't suppose to reach out to others who have lived and experienced similar paths as mine. I wasn't listening to, "I am sorry, but", and I didn't. I couldn't. I was driven.

My best advise after learning and researching all that I have over these past years is, if you are serious about getting published, fine tune your proposal/hook, stay focused on your goal and what it is you want. Publishing Companies only take on a few stories each year and I guess there are zillions of hopefuls, including myself, that really want to have their book on store shelves or to be interviewed on a talk show or to spread a message of hope with others.

Research, research and read books like the 2012 Writer's Market Book. Learn all you can and unless you are a celebrity writing about some random subject--maybe about puppies, or lipstick, you won't get noticed unless you do your homework. Ask questions of other published authors, or agents you may know. It's a journey just like any other in life; there are going to be ups and downs, stay on track and never stop believing. Most importantly talk to the ladies at tinshingle.com...you won't be disappointed.

Headshots: How They Impact Your PR & Sales, A Quick Reminder!

A good headshot is extremely important to your small business: it says a lot about the entrepreneur(s) behind the brand, is often the first chance the media you're pitching will have a change to see what you look like (often when they're deciding to use you as an expert) and it's also the first chance potential customers will get to see who you are.

Though everyone, whether they run a product or service based business, should have an updated headshot available to them at all times, a current headshot is especially important to service-preneurs and experts who are hoping to land on-air press opportunities.  A television producer will directly ask you for a headshot and you must be able to deliver a professional looking image that reflects how you look today, not five years ago.

Just as you wouldn't use a sloppy looking image on a family holiday card or as your image on an online dating site, don't use one for your headshot either.  In the same vein, you wouldn't use a photo from three years ago in a family holiday card or post a photo from years ago on a dating site, so don't do it for your professional work headshot.  Not only is it dishonest but it won't do your press relationships any favors either.

Speaking of the press and potential customers, remember who this photo is for....Sure it's representing your brand and you, but what is the entire goal here?  If you want a personal glamour shot session you want to hang in your home or over your mantle that's artistic and satisfies secret dreams of being in a major fashion spread or something similar, perhaps save that for a different photo session.  You are using these shots to sell your business and expertise to potential customers and the press who will potentially be introducing you to their viewers or readers.  Anything that doesn't make you look approachable, something that's a little too artistic, funky or confusing will not be doing you any good in this situation.

If you've read this far and are beginning to think, "it's time I plan a headshot session", be sure you jot down a few more notes to ensure the session is worth your time and money!

Normally our Motivation Mix Monday DJ's are hot entrepreneurs or media's finest, so you can imagine how excited we were to get a combo deal!  Presenting this week's guest DJ on the Motivation Mix turntables: Micah Jesse.  If you work with the media, especially the celebrity media in any way, OR if you are like many of us who love reading about celebrity & entertainment news and gossip, you know Micah

Not only is his eponymous website (www.MicahJesse.com) which he started approximately four years ago a hot commodity but so is Micah Jesse himself, who regularly serves as an on-air expert on all things Hollywood.  What we love about him, beyond the juicy scoop he dishes up daily, is that he created his dream brand the old fashioned way - hard work, hustling, connecting, serving as his own best publicist....and all the other things that make a great entrepreneur!

So how did he power his way into the spotlight and how does he keep up the pace that's help him spread his brand from NYC to LA to ATL?  Perhaps his choice of songs has a little bit to do with it.....

The Cure to a Small Marketing Budget: Get 'em with SEO

You're seeing your competition advertising where you can't - or don't want to - afford. You see their banner ads on Facebook, in the "Sponsored Link" area of Google searches, or even on blogs you're reading to relax! Well enjoy that blog read, because guess what: if your website is well SEOed, you may have an edge on them without spending a dime.

Here's why: people are searching for very specific things in search engines. The more specific your content and the more specific you get with it about what you're selling, the better your chances are of attracting new customers. On top of that, the more specific the search, the greater the "ah ha!" moment is for your potential customer, as they found something on your website that answers their need. This is why having good SEO can be more effective than marketing alone.

Marketing can spread your brand image. It can be visual. You can control what your customer sees. With SEO, your potential customer sees a list of search results - boring text. They are hooked by the blue link - your page title - and maybe the black text under that - your meta description tag (or, a random sentence pulled from that web page).

The key for you to get sales from SEO is going to be the clicking experience your customer must do once they click into your website from a search result. You've already naturally hooked them. Instead of them clicking on what they know is an advertisement trying to market to them, they clicked on a search result that feels more organic and natural - like you're not trying to sell something - like you just have the answer.

Once they are on your page, the path to buying what you're selling must be very, very clear. Your goal might be to get them to your Contact Us page, or to a form that produces and instant quote, or to an e-commerce page that sells your product. Whatever it is, the click process to the person getting there must feel natural to them. Your job is to keep providing the answer. Their job will be to follow your breadcrumbs.

If they aren't, if you look at your website stats in Google Analytics (hopefully you use this free services), and you see a lot of one-hit-wonders, aka, people who click the page, and click no further, you've got some brainstorming to do to improve your enticements on your web pages. Get with your website designer and SEO manager and start strategizing.

Master the click-through from search results, though, and you can sit back a bit, and keep that marketing budget on a shoestring!
