Getting Press via a Blogger and Your Affiliate Program

Bloggers are the rising stars of the Internet. From bloggers who create digital worlds in fashion, local, food, music, tech, motorcycles, everything, it's a great place to publish and be published in because the content is so focused. If the blogger has done their job, their audience trusts their recommendations and features the blog publishes.

The .EDU team at Tin Shingle is putting together a class with Jamie Werner, PR Director at Moderne PR, so that we can get the inside scoop on how publicists and small businesses are working with a strategy in blog PR: affiliate links and relationships.

How to Work with Style BloggersIf you listened to our class with Jamie on How to Work with a Style Blogger, you know that Jamie and I touched on this topic, and we agreed to do a followup class on it. When pitching a blog, sometimes publicists and small businesses themselves are asked a question by the blogger's team: "Do you have an affiliate program?"

There have been times when a blogger will be more inclined to promote a brand that does offer an affiliate program. An affiliate program is where a website mentions a brand, and links to that brand's website. If readers buy the product or the service after clicking on that link, the blogger (or any website publisher that uses an affiliate link) gets a sales commission from the sale.

What do you want to know from this class? Let me know in the comments below. Looking forward to reading your thoughts!

Pitch Now: Ideas & Brainstorms for your May Pitching Angles

PItch Now! Story ideas for MayI love writing the Pitch Now column every month because it reminds me of how much fun it can be to see a category or theme that’s “open for pitching” every month, and let your mind run wild creatively, thinking of stories related to both those themes and your business that you can pitch to the press.  Because these posts have inspired so many amazing pitch ideas and actual press coverage, we like to call them little doses of “Pitch-spiration”.

While using these ideas in your next brainstorming session, remember that you should be able to think of stories related to these themes whether you’re a service, product or expert based business, we gave you some examples of this below.  Also, remember that if you don’t think you can pull of a news story in time for a specific topic, or if nobody “bites” on your ideas, you can make your story ideas work overtime by adding them to your own company’s blog or using the themes for a social media promotion or post! Let’s get those buzz building ideas in motion! Here’s your May “Pitch-spiration”!

CINCO DE MAYO

This is what I call a super-fast, “lightning round” pitch, but if you’ve been cultivating relationships or have related, creative ideas that you can act on quickly, you can pitch stories related in some way to this holiday during the first week of May.  Whether you have food and drink recipes, healthy living tips for celebrating the holiday in a “guilt free” way, a party at your company or even historical or cultural information, now is your time to act!  If you don’t have time to do a press story, all is not lost!  Try instead to use this theme as an excuse for a fun promotion, blog post or set of tips on your own website.

GRADUATION TIPS & GIFTS

It’s nearly that time of year when the news outlets will be celebrating high school and college graduations around the country by sharing both graduation gifts, as well as tips from experts and service providers that the grads and their families can use.  These stories can include financial advice for new college students, interior design tips for dorm rooms, job hunting strategies – you name it – just be sure you tie it back to the graduates and their families.  Planning on pitching a product for their graduation gifts or perhaps for their dorm room living?  Be sure you add that little extra something to the pitch by clearly showing “what type of grad” it’s for (“Green” Grad (who loves eco), sporty graduate, world traveler, etc.) or be specific as to how they will use your product now or in the future.  Like with the other themes, begin planning now  if you think you want your social media streams and newsletters to celebrate graduation season!

MEMORIAL DAY

This holiday falls on May 26 this year, and like many holidays, they’re great for your PR campaign because they leave you open to several types of stories and pitches, that you can share with the media and of course on your blog or website as well.   Perhaps you can share tips, recipes or décor ideas for a wonderful Memorial Day Party?  How about traveling must-haves or health and safety tips for road trips for all of those visiting friends and relatives during the holiday?  Of course every major news show will be covering what to wear, eat, drink, or bring to all the fabulous Memorial Day parties that will be going on.  Look introspectively at your niche and your brand and think “how could we tie ourselves to Memorial Day” and go for it!  Begin planning now so you don’t fall behind.  As we always say regarding holiday stories: they fill up fast.  Early birds get the worms!

NATIONAL BIKE MONTH

Every month finds us as a country celebrating multiple holidays commemorating different health awareness campaigns, specific foods, activities and charities and May is no different.  One of my favorites this month was National Bike Month, which may be just perfect for your business or expertise.  Not something you can fit yourself into by any stretch of the imagination?  Spend a few minutes “Googling” May holidays and find one that works for you!  The media love tying their stories into calendar items like this, and there are countless options from the common to the creative and out of this world to check out!

MAYS BIRTHSTONE: EMERALD

Here’s a new way you can be sure your business has a regularly occurring theme you can talk about with a fresh twist every month:  tie a tip, product pitch or story idea to the month’s birthstone!  This month in May we’ll be celebrating Emerald.  Whether you want to talk jewelry, emerald the color, “powers” associated with the emerald, or any other creative “spin” you come up with, if you think you can tie it to an angle in your brand story – go for it!

We’ve Fallen in Love with the #SmallBizProud Campaign from Capital One Spark Celebrating Small Business [Partner]

It was love at first tweet. Sabina and I were having our weekly “digitally in-person” meeting over our computers, and I was skimming our Twitter stream. Fox Small Business had just tweeted an article, “Capital One Launches ‘I Am Small Business Proud Campaign’”, in which award-winning independent director and producer, Trisha Dalton and  editor and cinematographer, John Sears, embark on a 10-week journey across the country to explore the true fabric of America’s economy – small businesses - all of which are shared on the official website: www.iamsmallbusinessproud.com. Sponsored by Spark Business from Capital One, the “I Am Small Business Proud” campaign shines a spotlight on the backbone of this country’s economy.

Within an instant, I was hooked. Watching my first video was like falling down an amazing rabbit hole filled with suck-you-in, inspiring and motivating brand stories. The first #SmallBizProud story I discovered was John and Trisha’s first documentary about The Salty Paw, a groomer in Manhattan’s South Street Seaport and their owner Amanda Byron Zinc who illustrates how she started the store, and how her business survived Hurricane Sandy.  By the time I finished it, Sabina and my meeting had very much turned into a desire to share these stories and the coast-to-coast journey with all of you.

As to the origins of the movement, Buck Stinson, Senior Vice President for Spark, says this about why they created this project:  “As a leading financial resource for small businesses, we understand the value of getting close to our customers.  This is a great way for us to capture a true representation of small business owners and celebrate what they do every single day.”

Everything that we have discovered about this campaign aligns with what we do and support at Tin Shingle. That’s why we have joined Capital One Spark to help Team Trisha and John shine the light on small businesses from North Carolina to New York City, Scranton, PA to Sacramento, CA. We are now official #SmallBizProud groupies in a partnership with Capital One Spark!

For the next five weeks, you will see highlights of some of the most important take-aways from the #SmallBizProud campaign and anecdotal business lessons (not to mention bucket-loads of inspiration) from each business owner.  You’ll also get to know Capital One Spark a bit better, and discover their reasons for the campaign along with why they have such a soft spot in their hearts for small business!

From the pharmacist Mat Slakoper of Mat’s Pharmacy, who after working in a pharmacy spent two years looking for one of his own to buy, only to buy his hometown pharmacy and work for months until finally seeing profit which he hasn’t stopped doing in his 25 years of business...

...to the owners of the NIRO boutique, who not only design their own clothes, but teach fashion and entrepreneurship to youth in their community as part of their business model.

You can follow the filmmaker’s journey and check out past videos by state right now here, and stay tuned to our blog for our take-aways as they come! As of this blog posting, Trisha and John are traveling from New Orleans to Baton Rouge and Shreveport in Louisiana. SNAGGED: Kelly Kepner PR Snags Press in Business Insider

Kelly KepnerTin Shingle member Kelly Kepner is always looking for opportunities to promote her business, Kelly Kepner PR, as any savvy entrepreneur should. One of the ways she does this is by consistently staying on top of the PR Leads that we offer exclusively to our members and pitching the ones that she thinks are a good fit for her business.

Kelly knows that time is of the essence when deadlines are tight and that you have to jump on an opportunity when it is presented, which is how she landed press recently in Business Insider. As soon as Kelly saw the lead, she acted on it and it paid off. Read on to learn more about Kelly's story and why knowing your audience and taking swift action are a winning combination when it comes to getting press.

How often have you been working on your own PR?
10 years

Kelly Kepner Featured in Business InsiderWhat press opportunity did you snag and how did Tin Shingle contribute to your success?
On March 25th, I received the weekly PR leads from Tin Shingle.  I took a look, as I always do, and noticed there was an urgent query about working from home.  As an entrepreneur looking to promote my new business, I jumped at the opportunity to reply to the article and give my tips to Business Insider about working from home!

How long did the entire process take?
Minutes actually.  That's the thing with these urgent PR leads.  Most of them need the information ASAP and I've found that many of the spots fill up on a first come basis!

Can you walk us through the process, from pitch to placement?
The email came in around 2:15 PST and I emailed Richard by 3pm!  About 10 days later, Richard sent me the press!  Pretty simple actually.  I think it proves a point that if you stay on top of these PR leads, and then send a thoughtful and creative pitch (especially meeting any and all deadlines) that your placement had really great odds of being included.

What made your pitch extra special? What type of highlights did you include in your pitch to make it stand out? Was your subject line snappy or clever?
Knowing my audience was critical for this pitch.  I knew it was a business publication, rather than a fashion magazine, so my subject (Working From Home) was direct and to the point for the article.  While I love to whip up something creative for the fashion magazines, I knew something along the lines of "Crop it Like it's Hot" was not going to work this time around.  The best part about my pitch was that it was thoughtful and contained good tips.  I focused on the target publication and provided tips in a bullet point format for them to easily review.

Did you learn anything through this process that you can share with other small business owners?
First off, be sure to always check the dashboard for PR leads! They are a wonderful resource for all businesses.  Second, make note of deadlines and always respond in a timely matter. And third, know your target audience.  I love a playful fashion pitch (hey, that's why I'm in fashion PR!) but I also know the tone that is more appropriate for business journals and publications too.

Keep up the good work Kelly and thank you for sharing your tips and your story!

Hey Chicago, Wake Up with us Sunday Morning!

Hey Windy City - this Sunday you're a Tin Shingle kind of town!  Co-founder Sabina (a Chicago born gal herself) will be traveling to the midwest and on her journey she'll be stopping by NBC Chicago to talk about strategies that will make you less busy and more productive with their morning news team.  You can check her out during the 8 AM newscast and begin implenting her ideas in the coming week.

Not in Chicago? Never fear!  We'll be sure to post the clip of her tips and tricks shortly after.

Have a suggestion of a Chicago small biz she should check out while she's there?  Post it in the comments!

How to Be Less Busy (and Still Be Productive)

So you want to be a less busy person?  Good news, we're here to help.  Like anything in life and business, creating successful habits is something we get better at by practice, and if you're in a not-so-happy place feeling overwhelmed and perhaps even less productive than you should be, you may want to try a few of these solutions on for size.

Can We All be Less Busy?  YES!

Though there is no magic pill to swallow or switch to flick to add more than 24 hours to your day, the good news is that becoming a person who doesn’t feel overwhelmed, busy or unable to complete your to do list doesn’t have to be your description anymore.

Becoming less busy is all in your control and we’re going to give you strategies and changes you can begin doing now and when you do, you’ll start seeing more pockets of time open up in your day almost immediately. Let the strategies begin!

Strategy #1: Break Bad Habits That are Making You Flustered and Over-Busy

1st Step: Use a Time Log
Assess your current schedule via a Time Log to identify "time wasters," discover when you work best, and observe interruptions. Keep a time diary in the same way that people who are trying to lose weight keep a food diary.  There’s a reason these tactics are such a staple of Weight Watchers – they work.  Keeping a time log for a week and include everything that works its ways into your schedule will immediately draw your attention to where you’re wasting time. You will begin noticing your “Peak Productivity Patterns” when you feel like you’re on your game and you work the best.  These are the moments you’ll want to schedule your most difficult work and really pack in tasks.

2nd Step: Do the Hard Tasks & Things You Don’t Want to do First
We spend countless hours in our weeks by procrastinating and avoiding tasks that seem like they’ll be stressful or unpleasant.  Here’s the trick:  they are usually MUCH worse in our mind than they are in real life, and you add  too much time to your already packed schedule by doing other things instead of them.  We often create work instead of doing immediate the work we need to do, that could benefit us the most in the long run. The more you make doing your hardest tasks first and make it a habit this a habit the less stressed and less busy you’ll become.

3rd Step - Stop Multi-Tasking
Sure sometimes there are moments when multi-tasking is the answer, but overall you should try to focus on only one thing at a time.  Multi-tasking not only causes brain fatigue but it often results in 7 or 8 half finished tasks (that can stretch on as half finished for weeks) as opposed to 1, 2 or 3 complete tasks a day.  Giving up multi-tasking will actually save you time, and save you from stress and mistakes due to “brain splitting”.

Strategy #2 – Learn How to Say No in Three Steps – it will be the Most Powerful Lesson You Ever Master

1st Step  - Say No
Say no like a good handshake: politely and firmly, without an apologetic "no" (which is like a weak handshake), and without a "no" that is accompanied by with excuses or lies.  Remember - this means saying no to requests directly and  not agreeing to unrealistic timelines on projects (from work to kid’s bake sales) that will cause you to shuffle your schedule around and become more busy.

2nd Step - Is The Request "On Goal"
Ask yourself if the request is in tune with your personal or professional goals.  If it is not, and you are feeling pressed for time in general, say no.  No debate.  Agreeing to do things we don’t have time for, don’t have interest in or things that don’t further our personal or professional desires simply sucks time out of our lives that we don’t have to spare.

3rd Step - Stop and Think
Learn to pause before answering anyone’s requests, and tell them you’ll get back to them.  This is a great baby step on your road to saying no. We have become a society that is used to instant gratification and fast answers but I encourage you to take time to breathe, think clearly and answer emails, texts, or in person requests at a later date.

Strategy #3  Become a Master & Commander of Your Time

1st Step: Eliminate Interruption

We are on interrupted on average 8 times an hour which can lead to a loss of up to three hours a day of doing whatever it is we love!  These comes from social media, phone calls, emails, unnecessary meetings and so forth.  Find the culprits in your life and stop them! Whether you decide to turn your phone off or take the email alerts off your home screen and only check them once an hour, you need to find ways to make your time sacred, and stop the constant interruptions.

2nd Step: Create a To Do List the NIGHT BEFORE

Studies of highly productive and low stress people find that they do a couple of powerful things.

a)    They plan their day out the night before, so that they can dive in first thing in the morning and not waste time and stress out planning in the morning when they should be accomplishing things.

b)    They are realistic and accept that even on their to do list, things will change, things won’t always get done, and life will go on.  Don’t lose time freaking out if you have to amend your to do list

FINALLY - Schedule in time for yourself and time for the things that relax and re-energize yourself
Stick to these as if they were important board meetings or doctor’s appointments.  Machines and athletes need to rest and recharge and so do you.    You’ll often find that you get more clarity and more done when you’re spending less time at your desk or pounding the idea repeatedly in your head.  The brain at rest is a powerful thing while pushing yourself too much will only lead you to illness, mistakes and other things that in the end will work against your quest to be less busy!

Go forth and be LESS busy!

Spring Clean Your PR Campaign: What You Should be Doing Now...

Just as you may be spring cleaning your home, garden or desk this  month, it's essential that different parts of your PR campaign get a once (or twice) over to be sure they're ready to go and "strategically sound" for spring.  Use our tips below as a checklist to ensure you do just that!

Your Email Signature:

Let's start out nice and easy.  Open an email and check out what your signature says at the bottom.  Does it include all of your contact essentials, your website and your social media handles? Does it add that extra something special (and strategic) like a link to your newsletter or scoop on your latest press.  Maybe you have a quote that speaks to your personal or professional mantra.  Let your signature speak for you long before you actually connect with anyone face-to-face or on the phone!

Want to check out some other results driven changes for your signature that work for businesses like yours?  Read these!

Media Kit Must-Haves:

Though every media kit is different just as every business is, you’ll want to be sure yours includes these musts, and you should take time this month to be sure they’re up-to-date with current company news, statistics, press and offerings:  biography, “About Us” for your company, any relevant press releases (don’t include these just to include them, make sure it’s newsworthy information like product or company launches), linesheets/product lists and of course any product or personal photos (like your own headshot).

Media Targets and Contact Lists:

Don’t just keep going around in circles pitching the same people every month, widen your media outreach net.  Spend some focused, strategic time updating your contact list, checking out new possible media targets – even checking out where businesses similar to you or in your niche (or even competitors) have received coverage, as this is a pretty good sign that the people who are writing about them cover your type of story.  The goal with this To Do list item is to have you look at your current media outreach and spruce it up for spring.  Look at who you’re planning on reaching out to and be sure they’re still the best fit for your business.  Study some of the powerful new emerging online magazines and blogs,  check out your local press, start thinking of new angles to share your story and new places to share it in!  Instead of making this a daunting chore make it a fun challenge for yourself or your team and set out to create a complete and clean list of media contacts with whom you can create new, press-producing relationships!

Update Those Pitches & Images:

The seasons have changed and your pitches better too!  If you’ve been using the same pitches and follow-ups for a few months now, it’s time to spruce ‘em up and give them a spring makeover.  You’ll want to do the same thing with the images you’re embedding or including in your pitches – even if you have the same offerings, try to create a fresh, new way of displaying them visually.  As always, we’re big fans (and not paid to say it!) of Fotor, an app that let you do this from computer or phone quite easily! Want to be sure your pitch is perfectly put together?  Be sure to read this before you send it off!

Tin Shingle's Katie Hellmuth Martin Featured in The MomShift for Maternity Leave

The MomShift

Just like our Tin Shingle members, I peruse the PR Leads that come in daily to Tin Shingle, looking for media opportunities that might be a fit for our business. When I saw a lead from Reva Seth, looking for working mothers who felt that their children actually helped their careers, I was hooked. Usually the media feature stories on the opposite, so I was eager to contribute to this theme. The book is called The MomShift and it was published this year and has a companion website following more career success stories of women.

My children have helped my career, in that they have forced me to make career decisions I was putting off or avoiding. This included forcing me to let someone else do something that I am quite capable of doing (ie delegating and not drowning in my todo list), being more selective with clients and thus happier, closing a door of my business that was bringing me more stress than joy, only to open a door to another area of my business I'd had on the shelf for years.

However, running a business with children is not easy. One has less time that one's competitors, and traditional things like maternity leave will be different for an entrepreneur than for a mom with a 9-5 job who may have an official maternity leave policy written into her employment contract. During my interview with Reva, we discussed maternity leave, as it was something I was going through at the time when I was pregnant with my son, who is now 2 years old. I'd written an article about it for Tin Shingle, and Reva ended up publishing my thoughts from that article in her book.

It's quite an honor to be included with so many other important and eye opening stories of how women have found career success after having children, and how they approach it differently and in ways that work for their families. Reva guides the reader through the stories with gentle yet spot-on insight from her own observations and experiences. This book is my new best mom-friend. It is a comfort to read, and I don't want to reach the last page! Always a sign that I have a good book in my hands. :)

TuneUp Recap: How to work with Bloggers, Online Magazines & Other Online Content Creators

This past week we had an awesome and strategy-packed weekly #TuneUp talking which covered the Do's and Don'ts of working with online media.  In fact, we got so into it we're continuing the discussion (including best-practice strategies and straight talk about samples and gifting) next week, so be sure to tune in (or check out the forum for full recaps)!

Here's some scoop on what we discussed...

#1 – Why should a small business owner include blogs & online magazines and other online outlets in their PR campaign (which means regular, weekly outreach to different online outlets)?

  • One word: Eyeballs: Think about how many people are online via smartphones, iPads, iPhones, computers – from those who use these places to gather information to those killing time at work or in line, etc.
  • These outlets are in need of content regularly – from daily to weekly to hourly – this means they need products, services and experts to write about on an even more regular basis than print magazines.
  • You can develop a relationship with them quickly and be used by them again and again as a resource for tips or products or expertise.
  • The time that lapses from pitch to placement can be very miniscule. Because the content updates tend to move faster, you can pitch a story and be featured the next day (or even the same day in some situations)!
  • You can often reach these people more easily (most of their contacts are listed on their websites), you can connect with them at different times of the day that aren’t always restricted to the 9 to 5 of other media outlets, and you can even befriend them on social media.
  • With the advent of more and more successful blogs, websites and online magazines there is more of a need than ever for great content, which means that more than ever there is a need to share brand stories and businesses like yours!
  • As “regular brands” that are not traditional media outlets begin producing content there are even more new and big outlets to pitch.  Examples of this include women’s fitness center Lucille Robert’s lifestyle blog, and Target has their “Bullseye View” blog.  Content creation simply isn’t left to media outlets alone anymore!
  • When you are part of their online stories they socialize the heck out of them giving you and your brand even more reach!

For the full #TuneUp Recap head on over to the member forum where we'll share what we discussed "how to pitch" tips for reaching out to online media, how to grow relationships and more.

Also be sure to schedule time to join us live for next week's digital #TuneUp where we'll continue sharing more buzz building strategies in regards to online media!
