Small Biz Spotlight: How Candace Fair Turned StudioSox from an Idea to an Entire Product Line

The minute I heard about Candace Fair, founder of StudioSox, I knew her story was just what I needed to hear to get inspired.  For starters, this Pilates-instructor-turned-enterpreneur launch an innovative product line (from manufacturing to marketing) without any previous experience, which is the kind of small business story that always blows my mind.  The second thing I love about Candace's story is that it shines a big light on what many of us entrepreneurs do on a daily basis: we wear so many hats at our own companies, master tasks we had no idea how to do before launching, and we do it filled with a sense of adventure and excitement (at least most of the time).

For those reasons and more I was excited to get the chance to catch up with Candace and let her tell her story, packed with all the juicy details, about how she went from "I wish this product existed..." to "Heck why don't I just create it?!"

We’d love to start by you taking us through the story of you discovering a need and then creating these work/play/exercise socks that we now know as Studio Sox.

Your business began after you modified a pair of socks that you stumbled upon in a “hippy store”  in California.  But you had to have known something about this type of sock before even seeing it.  Tell us a little bit about your professional and personal background and how you became a sock connoisseur.

I work in a Pilates studio in Carpinteria, CA  which is on the beach in southern California.  In our studio we often work barefoot as do other  Pilates and Yoga Studios. However, I do  not like being barefoot all the time so I began looking around for socks to wear while teaching that would still give me the flexibility to demonstrate an exercise on the apparatus if needed. There were some socks on the market to meet this need but they didn’t satisfy me....they were too "socky", and could only be worn in the the gym or studio.

One day I was in northern California in a little “hippy” store and saw some Japanese style low-rise Tabi socks made of cotton. Cute! Perhaps I had found the solution to my problem.  But this time the socks were slippery on the the wood floors as well as the apparatus.  Bing! could I make these from a better fabric with a non-slip tread and have something to sell?  I asked others what they thought of my idea always they said go for it! The name for my company came to me while walking my dog. It just slipped off my tongue.

Now when you finally found this sock, and decided you were going to modify it to make it even better, did you have any previous business or production experience?

Before this light bulb idea I had never been an entrepreneur or produced a product for sale. I had been a dessert chef, ESL Teacher, stay-at-home mom, Pilates teacher... so I was entering completely new territory and by the way... I don’t like to sew. But there are people out there who do! So my job was to find the right people to do what I needed done!

How long did it take you to go from the place of “I’m going to make my own self a pair of socks” to “Okay, I’m going to create a business and produce these for others”?

What were some of the first things you had to do to get the ball rolling?

To carry this idea through to production I had to learn many terms  and titles with which I was unfamiliar:  laser cut  vs.die cut vs. saw cut .... this was just for the socks... It took  some time to get the product  exactly right and to launch an online e-commerce website which is a whole other adventure into the unknown. It is all  an ongoing process. Now I am learning how to sell on Amazon! I would say I took a long time... 2 or 3 years. Creativity and sorting out the steps came in bursts of activity  followed by some fallow weeks.  So I did not propel myself through it. I was slow and deliberate. (Too slow and deliberate my sons said!)

What were some of the most challenging things you had to figure out and learn along the way?

Before I started this business I had no reason to use many of the programs or applications that came with  my computer. Now  with many hours of staring at the computer  I know  so much more about my computer and the things it can do and it is  impressive!

I find it interesting to be beset with these new problems.. I don’t really like the word problem... perhaps stepping stones is a more optimistic term ....steps along the way  which cannot be stepped over or gone around and must be taken in a certain order.

What were some of the coolest things you had the opportunity to learn as you grew your business?

I have learned that I can figure out lots of things. It may take some time. The answers are out there, one just has to keep asking the questions. Sometimes one has to figure out what the question is!

Most people said I would have to take my business to China for manufacturing but knew I wanted to manufacture here in the USA - I wanted to see people face to face and  shake their hands. My vendors are within 90 miles of my office. StudioSox  American made products and of that I am proud.

Who would you say are the “users” of Studio Sox.  If someone were to tell you “well I don’t do Pilates or Yoga” what would you say?

Although StudioSox were created with Yoga and Pilates in mind, they have broken through that boundary. For instance, the grip tread makes them useful for seniors who need a  sure foot on bare floors such as wood or tile floors during night time trips to the bathroom. Younger wearers have made them a fashion statement with flip-flops and sandals... especially the open toe style.

Travelers love them as they are lightweight  and take up no space!  Perfect for hotel rooms that don’t provide slippers. StudioSox are also great for shoeless households. Imagine giving your guests a pair of darling StudioSox to wear during their visit as in a traditional Japanese household.  I also think that they  are perfect stocking stuffers and hostess  gifts.

Candace Fair

How do you stay motivated and wear so many hats in an operation of one?

Truthfully I had no idea there would be so many hats to wear within one day.  Motivation comes from all around me...the people I meet, Tin Shingle podcasts, my Mother, friends ... every time I get a order on Amazon my brother gets the biggest kick out of it.  So do I!

Where do you envision your entrepreneurial journey taking you over the next five years?

My goal is  to sell my successful business to a bigger and even more successful company that is delighted and lucky to acquire StudioSox!

  • Have you ever wished someone could look at your pitch and weigh in on it?

  • Have a subject line you want to test?

  • Wondering if the image you’re using in your pitch is a good one?

  • Have you ever wondered if the point you think you’re making in your pitch is clear and apparent to someone reading it outside of your biz?

  • Do you just want another set of eyes on your pitch (the answer to this should always be YES)?

The Pitch Workshop: Get and Get Feedback, Advice and Tips on Your PitchTin Shingle has introduced a new Pitch Workshop Forum to our exclusive, member-only online forum. Just like writers often "workshop" their pieces in groups (these are  meetings where they weigh in on each other's work, give advice, suggested edits, critiques and insight) this virtual Pitch Workshop allows our community of entrepreneurs and small business owners  - as well as several PR and marketing pros - to weigh in on each other's pitches.

This really speaks to the true power of a community like Tin Shingle.  You don’t have to do it alone!  You are not alone!

Not only are you not alone, you no longer have to wonder about all those questions I mentioned at the start of this post because because you now have a community of people who can share their experiences and insight with you, whether you want to ask an opinion on the way you're wording a specific phrase or if you want to copy and paste your entire pitch in the forum for feedback (yup, that's allowed as well).

The entire process is as simple as visiting the Pitch Workshop Forum and sharing your pitch, anytime, day or night.  When other members weigh in, you'll get an email alerting you to this and you can hop right back into the Forum to see what they have to say and even reply.

You do need to be a Tin Shingle member to participate in the Pitch Workshop Forum, and all of the Forum conversation areas available to members. If you haven't joined us yet, don't waste one more moment wondering if you're sending the right pitch out, join our community and platform now and be sure of it!

Meantime, what questions do you most often have about the pitches you write?  Share them in the comments below, and you may just find an answer in an upcoming article or podcast!

#SmallBizStyle: Consign & Rent Online: Kids Clothes & Toys Get New Life Thanks to 2 Small Businesses

The moment my sister had her baby - the first grandchild - I learned two things: nephews are amazing, and kids & children go through clothing and toys faster than we can buy them.  This means that you're faced with constant purchases (which gets expensive, fast), just as much as you are dealing with items that they grow out of - some that have never been worn or used in the first place.

The two businesses profiled below feel your (and your wallet's) pain, and have created solutions that anyone with a child in their life will want to sign up for right away.  They have also created services with philosophies that show they truly care about the children and families they support - a win-win in any business!

Kid's Consignment Small Business Awesome My Kids Threads Buy & Sell Kids Clothes Online with My Kids Threads

Pitch Now: Story Ideas for September the Press Will Love

Pitch Now! Story Ideas for SeptemberIt's September!  Where did the summer go?  I, personally, am like many who are celebrating the start of fall as to me it means lower temps, less humidity and more members of the media are back after summer hiatus which means more outlets to pitch great small biz stories to!

We like to kick every month off over here at the Tin Shingle blog by sharing seasonal, timely ideas that you can adapt to your own product, service or expertise in order to maximize your chances of landing a story in the press, and this month is no different!  Check out the ideas below and challenge yourself to "spin" yourself into a story about or around them.  Want to make the ideas below work double or triple duty?  Let them inspire blog or social media posts for your followers and readers to engage with, learn from and enjoy!

#1 Play on the Back to School Theme - No Matter Your Business

One only need to check their Facebook feed which is probably still packed with "first day of school" photos to know it's back to school time.  For some of you, this means creating stories that are directly related to kids returning to classrooms.  I've seen everything from "the health impact of heavy back packs on children" to "tips for kids dealing with bullies" to "how to pack a healthy lunch your kids will love".  Check out those ideas - all from different types of experts and businesses putting their own spin on a universal topic.  But what if your business or expertise is in no way related to kids/back to school?  Just take the theme and make it your own.  For example: Back to School for Business: 5 Tips Every Small Biz Owner Needs to Deal with Difficult Customers.  Back to (Cooking) School: 4 Easy Recipes You Can Make for Under $20.00.  The key here is to take a topic that everyone is and will be talking about for the next four weeks or so and make it your own!  Also, remember that you don't have to use this subject verbatim.  Feel free to play it with to make it work.  For instance one could try:  Kids are Back in School, Time for Mom to Relax: Must Have At-Home Spa Products.  The key is tying yourself to the theme, topic and season, not necessarily the words themselves.

#2 Fall Trends: Fashion, Home, Accessories, Beauty, Health, Fitness - You Name It!

Fall is trend-heavy.  By that I mean it's one of the biggest times of year - if not the biggest - to talk about fashion trends, but really, this change of season ushers in a time to talk about any new seasonal trend that people must (according to you, business owner) know about!  What is everyone going to be doing, talking about, wearing, drinking, eating, listening to or experimenting with this season?  What new activity or idea can you share?  This type of story can work whether you are teaching someone about this new fall trend, or it can work for you if you can identify a trend category that people are talking about already that your product or service fits into.  Here are some more pointers in regards to making this pitch work:  the more visual or interesting/out of the box this trend your sharing is, the higher your chances of getting it on television.  If you're going for print or online press, you don't have to be able to share it as visually, but you do have to be able to talk about why it's a trend and why people should care about it.  Finally, remember to share it with the right audience.  Not every outlet will care about fitness trends, not everyone will want to talk about fall baby product trends, but some will.  Find the right home for your story and it will be much easier to get it picked up in a big way!

#3 September Observances & Holidays: Find One That Works for YOU!

One of the fastest and easiest (relatively speaking) ways to get press for your business is to tie it into a seasonal holiday or observance, and every month presents new and interesting ways to do that.  September is no different.  The key here is to do your research and find a celebration that authentically fits your business and message.  I've listed a few below, and if they don't work for you simply take to Google to find a few that do.  One pointer?  Be sure you aren't just sharing the holiday but are building a story around it.  What will you be doing on-air, online or within your business to celebrate this holiday?  What is the takeaway going to be for viewers, readers and listeners.  By picking out a cool and interesting holiday and creating a great story around it, you're going to have a killer one-two press punch!

A few holidays we took note of this month:

  • Hispanic Heritage Month
  • National Chicken Month
  • Honey Month
  • Self-Improvement Month
  • Baby Safety Month
  • Happy Cat Month
  • Mold Awareness Month
  • National Fruit & Vegetables Month
  • Skincare Awareness Month

And oh, the list goes on!  Find one that works for you and let the pitches, blog posts and social media ideas fly!

Tin Shingle Recommends: 4 Social Media & Online Marketing Experts Every Biz Should Know About

4 Social Media and Online Market Experts Small Businesses Should Know AboutIt's hardly a  secret that there is no scarcity or drought in regards to the availability of educational content in the areas of social media and online marketing these days.  Everywhere you look there is a resource or expert sharing information you can read, watch, download or listen to - the Internet is filled with people who are ready to share (or sell) you their knowledge.  But not all information is created equally, and you, dear biz owner, do not have time (P.S. time = money) to spend searching for or engaging with content that isn't worth your while.  To help you cut through all the noise we've created a list of excellent experts and content providers that we love and trust - and read and learn from ourselves.  As business owners we have to do a couple of things regularly in order to grow and thrive: build buzz, "sell ourselves" and our brand stories, and connect with people on and offline.  The people and websites below are going to make that easier, faster and quite frankly, more enjoyable for you to do.  Let's meet them!

Savvy Sexy Social & Founder Amy Schmittauer
Amy's "marketing lifestyle vlog" serves up social media and online marketing advice with a side of sassiness and humor, in an engaging and easy to follow style and voice.  Her blogs and vlogs cover must-know topics in a clear and concise way and her mission is to remind business owners "Marketing isn’t just a department in your company (or for many of you, that naughty item on your to do list). It’s a lifestyle. How you present yourself, run your business, talk to your connections, share your ideas, live your dream. It’s your culture and it’s all marketing."  If you need to master YouTube, podcasting or social media tools and tricks - whether you're just dipping your toe in or have been in "socializing" for years - we recommend you sign up for her newsletter, watch some her of her vlogs and fall for her style and content just like we have!

Contently

HubSpot
If you were on our live #TuneUp webinar this week you heard me mention HubSpot when I was discussing the best and worst times to post on different social media platforms.  I was able to share this information (and understand it myself thanks to an easy to follow infographic) thanks to HubSpot and their Inbound Marketing Blog. The company itself creates tools, content, training, and services that help companies do a better job at attracting more customers, eyeballs, leads and engagement to their websites.  Let's admit it, the way we do business in this online world has changed, and not all of us have mastered this new way of doing it.  As HubSpot themselves say, "The problem is that there’s a fundamental mismatch between how organizations are marketing and selling their offerings — and the way that people actually want to shop and buy."  Enter HubSpot, who regularly provide great insight into the art of this specific type of attraction.  So where do you start on their site?  We recommend you get hip to these three places:

Gary Vaynerchuck
These days, one cannot talk about social media without also talking about Gary Vaynerchuck.  I had the pleasure of hearing him speak years ago when social media was still a "new thing" for most businesses, and within minutes I was ready to dive head first into multiple platforms that up until that day I thought were "for college students and techies.  Fast forward at least five or six years and I remain loyal to this entrepreneur, author and true social media expert who doesn't just talk the talk, but runs his own multi-million dollar e-commerce business as well as an agency that works in the social media and digital content creation world. I love Gary because like so many of us "hustlers" out there, he has no time for BS, he doesn't fill his information sessions with padding or fluff, and he is oh so generous with his knowledge.  Gary recently launched his online #AskGaryVee show providing one more way to engage and learn with him from the comfort of your own office, home or (ahem) couch.  Tap into his blog here, the gateway to all his goodies, and get ready for one energetic, info-packed ride...

Ah, who else do I love for buzz building content of all kinds...US!
At Tin Shingle all we do all day long (well beyond engaging and connecting with small biz owners like you) is think of new ways to educate you, inspire you and make your social media, PR and online marketing easier to understand and execute!  We've worked in these industries for years, as have the teams of experts we cultivated who share articles, classes and more with our community on a weekly basis.

Dive into our blog, expert articles, tip sheets, podcasts and more and watch your confidence and skills grow and flourish! It happens to small biz owners like you on a regular basis.  You don't just have to take our word for it!  Just look at what they tell us and tweet to us!

Now that we've shared some of our favorites, let us know - have we missed any social media and online marketing pros?  Who should we include on our next Tin Shingle Recommends list?  Tell us in the comments below!

What My Expensive Hair Salon Can Teach You About Value, Pricing & Your Brand

Ted Gibson Business Strategy

My name is Sabina and I pay a pretty penny for my hair to be cut and colored at my hair salon, Ted Gibson.  And by pretty penny I mean several pennies...A truck bed full of pennies perhaps.  Before going to my quarterly appointment I always hesitate for a split second and think to myself, "Wait, should I just switch to the less expensive salon down the street?"  The answer is always an emphatic no. The reasons behind this are part of what I like to call the Value Creation Equation and mastering it is a powerful lesson in brand positioning and value perception that every business - no matter what type - can learn and apply to everything from how you price things to the way you run your business from day to day.  Mastering this equation and doing it as well as the Ted Gibson team does will help you increase your perceived value, which in turn will allow you to increase your customer or client base, perhaps even increase your prices, and at the end of the day, make the money you need and are worth.

The Value Creation Equation:

Expertise + Experience + Results + Visibility = VALUE

No matter where you are in your business right now and no matter what you do, you can begin working on improving different parts of this equation, and as you do this, your value (both perceived and actual) will begin to increase.  Let's discuss it in terms of the lovely Ted Gibson and team.

EXPERTISE

Not everyone can be a master at everything.  In fact, if someone claims to be an expert in multiple different fields I begin to question their expertise in any of those fields.  People pay to have experts help them do things that they are not masters of themselves. We do it every day.  We actively seek out people to provide services, information, education, products, you name it!  Your expertise is valuable.  There is someone out there - probably several people - right now who needs it. The better you get at it, the more you improve and grow your own skill set in that field, the more you educate yourself, the more you stay on top of what is "now and next" in your world, the more you'll grow that part of the Value Creation Equation.

When I was referred to Ted's salon by a friend after having one of the most awful hair cuts of my life (excluding that time I tried to cut it on my own at about two years old).  This person was not an expert, but they were cheap.  Lesson learned: I needed an expert.  Ted Gibson and his team are known nationally as experts in the hair styling world, and everyone on his team is a highly trained expert at their craft.  I was soon matched up with my stylist Dayna, and it's been love ever since.  She knows her stuff, she is a master at a great haircut, she trained for it, she is always learning new techniques and methods, and it shows.  Not only has she taught me the power of a killer "face frame", but her passion and skill have also taught me the power of a true expert.  Master what you do, study it, make it more than obvious that you are a trusted expert in your field.

EXPERIENCE:

The moment you walk into a Ted Gibson salon you just feel amazing.  They welcome you the moment your foot hits their impeccably clean floor, they whisk you away to a private changing room where you put on your cozy kimono while they get you a glass of lemon water, tea or coffee.  It's the cleanest salon I've ever been into and beautiful from wall to wall.  The energy is positive and powerful.  The team looks like a million bucks, from the gal sweeping the floor to the men behind the reception desk.  You can tell they like to work there as much as you're enjoying getting your hair done there.  While you sit in your chair, they come over to give you a hand massage.  You never feel rushed, you always get "star treatment" and when you leave (with everyone telling you how great you look - and you do look amazing) you're more or less high on the experience.  When you return home that day, you'll find a sweet email from Ted and team in your inbox thanking you for choosing them and ensuring your experience was all that you wanted it to be.  That is what creates value.  That is what people return for.  A negative customer experience, whether it be on your website, in your brick and mortar office or via phone can not only ruin one person's opinion of you, but that of their friends and colleagues all of which results in a loss of prospective clients.  A positive experience does the opposite. It's what leads to referrals, to return and repeat customers and it makes a big impact in your Value Creation Equation.

RESULTS:

Simply telling people you're an expert or giving them a positive experience at your office or on your website isn't enough, your results need to be able to speak for you as well.  Whether you create products or services or your expertise is the foundation upon which your business is built, successful results matter.  If you can't translate these things into favorable results the rest of the equation falls apart.  I never returned to my first hair salon because I never wanted to have the experience of what was in fact an unsuccessful result (in the form of a terrible hair cut and color) ever again.  I have never had a bad result (read haircut, color) at Ted Gibson.  Never.  I pay for consistently good results.  Sure, we all have to start somewhere and there will always be room for improvement, but as your results success-rate grows, so will your value.

VISIBILITY:

Expertise, experience and results are vital to growing your business and your value, but they can be exponentially more powerful if as many people as possible know about them!  This means you have to be visible!  This fact alone is one of the main reasons that Tin Shingle exists - because buzz building is essential to increasing your value...and your hourly rate, and your customer base, and your ability to survive and thrive!  I was first "introduced" to Ted Gibson because my mom was a loyal fan of the program What Not to Wear on which he was their feature hair stylist.  Ted can also be seen regularly in magazines, on television, on the social media feeds of the celebrities he styles and more.  I'm not saying you have to be best friends with Lupita Nyongo to be visible, but you do have to put effort into your public relations, your social media, your online marketing and so forth.  You have to be visible.  This could even mean you put effort into speaking or educating your local community.  Most likely it means you spend time on multiple types of buzz building efforts and strategies.  The more buzz and visibility you get, the more your value increases.

The Force Is Now With You...

So there you have it, the Value Creation Equation.  Though it may feel overwhelming try to see the power it gives you.  Every part of this equation is in your control.  Each factor in it can be tweaked and applied to different parts of your brand, from your website to your intern training to your social media campaigns to your packaging.  You have the power to create more value, change your business and make more money!  Go forth and prosper!

Have some other strategies you use to share your value?  Tell us about them below!

On Oprah Admiration, Favorite Books, Success Secrets & our OUR Startup Story: Tin Shingle in the News

Secrets of Success

We never tire of reading about successful entrepreneurs and gaining bits of wisdom through their stories, their tips and other interesting tidbits of information they share.  This past week the script was flipped and we were able to share highlights from our own story when co-founder Sabina shared some personal insight into her small business journey as well as why we started Tin Shingle via an interview with Web.com's Small Business Forum.

This interview was especially special to Sabina because it was led by Rieva Lesonsky, a leader in the small business and entrepreneurship world who she has admired since college, long before she even knew that running her own business was an option! She is a small business advocate, journalist, best-selling author and is the former editorial director of Entrepreneur magazine, a position she held for 20+ years. In fact, Rieva's book Young Millionaires was one of the first seeds planted in Sabina's brain that eventually grew into as full grown passion for all things entrepreneurial.

In this interview you'll find out:

  • What Sabina wanted to be when she grew up (which was not at all an entrepreneur)
  • Why we knew we had to create Tin Shingle
  • What the best business advice Sabina ever received was
  • What we think about the "us vs. them" mentality some business owners have
  • Some small biz predictions for the year
  • More!

Twitgift Takes Virtual Appreciation into the Real World - and I Got a Cupcake in a Jar Out of It!

TwitGiftThis past Sunday, I arrived home in Brooklyn after the end of a long road trip to the most delightful surprise: There, on my table, was a cupcake in a jar. I ate it for breakfast yesterday and it was delicious.  Now you're probably wondering what cupcakes in jars have to do with anything Tin Shingle talks about so let me turn the clock back a week or so and fill you in...

At Tin Shingle we've used GotoMeeting's webinar services to lead our weekly small biz #TuneUps for years, and we've always been big fans of both their actual service and their customer service.  This past week I needed some support with their tools and was blown away by how kind, helpful and patient they were while helping me, and decided to share my gratitude for help during my "tech crisis" with them via Twitter.  Within minutes of tweeting at them I received this tweet in return.

I followed the link to TwitGift, entered the information they needed (simply my home address and email) and I went back to my webinar work.  Within a week, well, you know how it ended!

This was my first introduction to TwitGift but now I'm a fan and soon to be user.  The power of even the smallest tokens of appreciation, simple surprises and taking virtual relationships into the real world is immeasurable in business.  What may seem like an insignificant gesture can create long term and impactful client relationships.  As my mom often says, "how you do anything is how you do everything", and GotoMeeting along with TwitGift are doing it right.

Curious about how TwitGift works?  Here's how simple it is:

Step One: Login to TwitGift via your Twitter account
Step Two: Pick out & Purchase a Gift for the Person You Want to Show Real-Life Gratitude To (they range from cupcakes in mason jars to bourbon marshmallows).
Step Three: Your Twitter friend claims their gift after you tweet it to them.
Step Four: Twitgift takes care of the shipment (and let me just say they do a beautiful job, and my mason jar cupcake arrived with the GotoMeeting logo on the top of the jar).
Step Five: Twitgift says it best "You look awesome" - and you do!

We live in a virtual world, which empowers small business owners in countless ways.  That said, it's always nice to connect offline as well, and when a company makes that connection so simple and well, delicious, they deserve praise!  Thank you Twitgift, consider this blog our cupcake right back to you!
