50 Shades of Grey, Cinderella, Wedding Month and More: Stories the Press Wants in February!

February is right around the corner which means it's time for our monthly installment of "what to pitch".  The ideas we share with you in this column reflect press-worthy, timely and relevant topics that when used can increase your chances of landing press because they're topics the news will definitely be talking about.  Your job is to use these ideas as a springboard to your own customized story angles and pitches.  Just think - you could be on the news in just a couple of weeks!  Exciting, eh?  With that, let's get going...

50 Shades of Grey

That got your attention didn't it?  Well folks, 50 Shades is in theaters this Valentine's Day, yes Valentine's Day.  Just in case you need a reminder about what this movie will be about, here's the trailer! Now that we're all on the same page, let's discuss: what could your small biz possibly talk about where 50 Shades of Grey are concerned?  Get creative!  This topic can lend itself to angles that a relationship, romance or love expert could delve into, but you could just as easily turn it into a topic that an author or even a book club group could piggyback onto.  I've already seen the press looking for 50 Shades inspired makeup, fashion and so forth, so if you think there could be a connection, start brainstorming.  But hurry, because Mr. Grey will see you very soon...and that means other savvy buzz builders will be creating similar story angles.

Cinderella

Yes, it's another movie, and the reason I'm listing this in February's hot topics as well is because it's going to be another big one ladies and gents!  Cinderella officially opens March 13th but because this is such a magical and famous story, and because so many generations have been touched by it, the short lead news outlets (TV, websites, blogs, radio, newspaper, celebrity weeklies) are going to be buzzing about it by the end of February and continue that into the first half of March.  If you think you can speak to some angle related to this story, you want to get cracking!  Needs some help getting your idea muscles pumping?  Here you go: relationship experts can talk about the concept of Princess Charming and how it helps or hurts those looking for romance, parenting and children's experts can talk about the Princess-effect on little girls, experts can talk about why this story has captured out minds and hearts for generations, fashion and beauty experts can talk Cinderella-style, event pros can share tips for hosting Cinderella-inspired parties for kids...the list is endless.  Don't have any clear tie to Cinderella? Don't worry!  You can use the premiere to inspire a Disney-themed promotion or sale at your business.  It's all about jumping on that sure-to-be-buzz worthy bandwagon!

PS - Indulge yourself in the Cinderella trailer as well, it will clean the palette after 50 Shades, and inspire your story creating!

Summer Everything

Don't forget, though we're all freezing in our boots in most parts of the country this month, the long lead magazines (the ones that come out every month) are well into their summer stories.  Set aside a day to get into the summer spirit at work and work on some summer themed story angles.  We've already received media requests over here at Tin Shingle (that you can find in our exclusive PR leads this week) for contributions to stories on summer skin protection, summer fashion, summer work-out tips and more.  If you want to see your product, service or expertise in the glossy pages of a monthly magazine this summer, now is the time to act!  Get a quality pitch together (you can access a template here) and be the early bird that catches those yummy press worms!

Valentine's Day

Obviously.  The thing is, in February most of the gift guides and other tips and advice stories will be filled up - the press doesn't wait until the last minute for most of these.  That said, there will still be places looking for last minute ideas and if you have a creative, originally and must-hear idea (run of the mill won't work here, they've already filled that up) I still encourage you to try a website, blog or even (though it may be too late you can always try) a local news station! That said - if you want to talk romance but don't want to get lost in the Valentine's Day chaos, think about this: February is also National Wedding Month - perhaps try your hand at that story angle.  You'll find you have less competition and many of your ideas and pitches will work for it as well with just a few little tweaks!

Small But Mighty PR & Social Media Tasks to Occupy Snow Days - or Any Day When Schedules Shift Unexpectedly

Hello from snowy Brooklyn! In fact, much of the northeast coast of America is dealing with major winter weather activity, and even here in Tin Shingle Town (where we're both based in the New York area) we're in various stages of shut down.  This means thousands of business owners are working from home (if they don't regularly already), and some of those people have kids joining them for the day thanks to school closings.  But that doesn't mean we don't want to keep moving our businesses and our buzz full steam ahead!

What's a buzz builder to do when unexpected weather - or other unavoidable events - throw schedules off course and force you to shift your energy away from the projects you intended to work on?  Try fitting in some of these small but mighty buzz building activities that you can fit into the pockets of time when you're not shoveling snow, managing kids stuck at home or dealing with business issues that were thrown off due to the inclement weather.

Not in a cold-weather climate? No matter - these mini buzz building projects can be used on any day your schedule shifts or your once full work day is broken up by unforeseen events!

Bio Check:  This is the perfect time for a cross-platform "Bio Check".  Visit the biography portion of all your marketing materials and platforms.  This means check it out on your website, on social media, in your media kit, in your pitch or press release templates - everywhere! Is it up-to-date in terms of recent press, social media handles, company news and updates and the overall "vibe" you want it to give off?  Could it use a refresh in terms of copy, links or images used?  Let today be the day it gets the TLC it deserves!

Play with Your Instagram Link: If you're active on Instagram there's no doubt that from time to time you've seen posts showing off an awesome product, service, article, blog post or opportunity that will lead you to more information if you "click on the link in bio".  This type of post means that the person who created wants to lead you to a specific page online so they went into their Instagram bio and edited the link to include not just their website (the usual link that most people use) but instead directs people to a more specific place online.

This helps people who see the link and like what you're promoting or sharing to get access to it immediately, no need to hunt it down.  Today could be a great day to try this out.  Show off an awesome product, a class you're offering or a page on your website you want to drive traffic to.  Make the image you're sharing on Instagram that pertains to it clear and enticing, make the copy that accompanies the post magnetic and let them know that they can learn more by clicking the link in your bio!  This is a great exercise in playing around in your Instagram feed, it invites you to try something simple and new, and it's worth the try!  Let us know how you "change it up" in the comments below!

Review Your Pitch Templates: If you've ever listened to a Tin Shingle podcast or joined us for a live #TuneUp, you know that we've taught you that every strategic DIY PR pro (and professional publicists alike) have a few pitch templates that are pre-made, ready-to-go and need only to be customized with opportunity-specific information before you send them out.  These include email templates for when you answer PR leads, templates for piggybacking on hot topics in the news and even templates for offering yourself as an expert on various stories.  Days like these are a great day to open the word documents that you're saving these templates in, and sprucing them up, giving them a once over with a fresh eye, and even seeing if they can be improved!  Haven't got these templates yet?  Now is a great time to start working on them.  Check out this podcast if you need some pitch-creation coaching!

Member Update: Valentine's Gift Guide is Open!

The Member-Created Tin Shingle Valentine's Day Shopping Guide is now open in the SmallBizDiscoveries Shopping Guides. These are shopping guides that members can add to at any time. All readers of the Tin Shingle website can click through these guides to find awesome gift ideas!

BEST PRACTICE TIPS FOR SHOPPING GUIDES:

  • Write a killer description. Get creative here, and show why your customer will love this. Don't just list your item with 5 words and call it a day. Put on your editor hat!
  • Get descriptive in your title: This is a big SEO tip. Your Title is very important for attracting the right kind of customer. If this is a gift idea for a guy or a husband, add those words to your title. Example: "Valentine's Gift Idea for Guys or Husbands Who Snowboard".
  • Include a link to buy. You will be able to put a link to buy your product from your website. This link should be to the product, not just your home page.

TECHNICAL HOW-TO ADD TO THE SHOPPING GUIDE
If you are a Tin Shingle member, you can start listing right now!

  • Log into your Tin Shingle Member Account Center and click on the My Account Center link, or right here.
  • If you're on the Home page, click on the "My Benefits" button. If you're on any other page, look at the right side column and click on SHOWCASE (add/edit) under the "SMALL BIZ DISCOVERY CENTER" (or click right here to get started)

Savvy Super Bowl Buzz Building Strategies

The Super Bowl is coming up - this February 2nd! Whether this means anything to you or not on a sports fan level doesn't matter in terms of what I'm going to share with you next (confession: I don't even know who is playing).  The fact is, with some clever and quick thinking, you still have time to make this even work for you in terms of social media, sales and press.  Your job is to find a link between your biz and this big day, and turn it into a pitch, post or promotion.  Needs some help?  Here are some ideas to get you closer to the goal line....

Final score determines an awesome promotion or discount:
This could mean the winning score (number) indicates the percentage off customers can get for a certain time, this could mean different promotions are activated depending on which team wins, this could even mean free shipping during the entire Super Bowl weekend.  Have fun with it and find something that works for your business model.

Share football inspired fitness moves, stretches or work outs:
Kick it up a notch and share moves they have to do based on the plays carried out in the game.  In other words, think of this like a drinking game but with fitness not alcohol.

How to throw an awesome Super Bowl party:
What to eat, specialty cocktails, decor, invitations - they all need to be talked about, share information from the areas you in which you have expertise.

Football explained to the non-football fan:
Do you have tips or easy ways to understand this all-American game?  First - explain it to me, then, turn it into magnetic content for your blog or a pitch!

Participate on Twitter & Instagram using the right hashtags:
Before diving into this platform look to see what other brands and people are using as hashtags.  Some may even pop up based on what's going on in the game or commercials!

Football Commercial Analysis:
Offer to contribute thoughts, insight or reviews of the famous football commercials as or after they happen.

Throw an Anti-Super Bowl Party:
Invite the media, have fun anti-sports activities, make it newsworthy.  OR just share tips on how and why anyone could do this on their own!

How to Keep Cool Under Pressure: for Athletes or Regular Folks:
The Super Bowl is a big pressure day for football players, and I'm sure there are strategies they can use to keep cool and focused.  What are they?  Can we as "lay people" try them as well?  If this is your expertise share tips!

Make Your Biz a Part of Your Customers or Followers Parties:
You may not be able to be there in person (that could be strange) but you can create downloadable tips, activities, art work or other digital goodies that people can print out and use on the big day.  Need an idea?  How about: scorecards, commercial rating sheets, fitness plans, recipes, non-football inspired activities - get creative and be sure it's branded with your business's logo, website and contact details!

PS - remember, the Super Bowl is a copyrighted term so creating actual products you're selling that use that word is tricky.  Read about that - and how Chipotle got around it, here!

Open Letter Anyone Working in Government on Sick Days, Snow Days, Maternity Leave, and Childcare:

School Delay for Snow and Canceled Pre-K

Dear Anyone Working in the Federal or State Governments on Sick Days, Snow Days, Maternity Leave, and Childcare:

There is much talk about how working people need to get paid for sick days and how hard it is for new parents, in particular new mothers, or mothers in general of young children, to go back to work, or for that matter, to work at all.

Childcare, as everyone knows, is expensive. To send one child to 5 days of childcare at a great program can be anywhere from $7K-$15K per year per child just so that you can go to work. Welcome to paying for private school right out of the womb, when you never even factored that into your budget during your early marriage years.

For those of us taking advantage of public schools, we are at a great disadvantage in the winter when any snowflake falls, or rain becomes slushy and "Snow Days" are called, or "2hr Morning Delays with Pre-K Canceled". This puts a huge wrench into the working parent's schedule and forces them to either take a sick day, or come in late. Or if they are a small business owner like myself who works from her home office, miss the day entirely. A day which I never get paid for as a "sick day".

The public school's quickness to cancel schools has a ripple effect that encourages people to enroll their children into private systems, which are for-profit businesses, which do not close when one snowflake falls. I live in New York, but you'd think I lived in Florida, when we wake up with a light dusting on the ground, and the email shown above is sent to us from the School Superintend at 5am, drastically altering our plans for the work day. There is no babysitter to call at the last minute, and a drop-off center may be far away. Not to mention the added cost. [NOTE: I actually can't find links, in a quick 1-minute Google search, that discuss the large amount of school closings, as they all boast about New York City not closing schools for snow. In the past two years that I've been in the system, this has not been true outside of the city in the rest of the state, and surrounding states.]

Because of this quickness to cancel schools, our child is enrolled in our daycare's UPK (Universal Pre Kindergarten) program, where she can go to Pre-K at her usual daycare free from 8:30-11:30am. We then have the choice to continue with the full day of "wrap around care", where she can have lunch, nap and play until 5:30pm. However, children enrolled in UPK do follow the public school's cancellation schedule. So when Beacon Public Schools cancel, my child cannot attend her Pre-K with the other kids. Unless she was additionally enrolled in full time daycare, or if she's not (as she's not this year...only does two days in full time daycare), we can pay $15 for her to attend the 8:30-11:30am period for that snow day.

So instead of sticking it to the employer, and blaming employers for not paying for sick days, or not making it easy for working parents, please take a look inward at these cancellation policies of school districts, and encourage individual school districts to operate like a successful business who stays open.

What I Wish I Knew About PR Before I Became a Pro

One of the best ways to learn how to do something better, faster and more strategically is by asking a pro, and that's exactly what we did for you over at Tin Shingle this week.  Not only did we ask a handful of PR rock stars how to do things better, we asked them what they wish they'd known about doing PR before they spent years honing their skills and perfecting their craft.  What a great way for you to save yourself from months or years of trial and error.  Read on, learn from our pros, and continue building buzz like a seasoned professional!  Bonus Prize: When you're done reading their tips, click on their faces and names and connect with them in real time via Twitter.

Regardless of whether you're a one-person show, or have multiple employees in your business, don't ever doubt that you're worthy of the same press placements as everyone else. Don't wait until you feel that you're "big enough" to chase down press placements. Oftentimes, I'll talk to emerging brands who have all of the elements in place - a great company, mission, product...but because THEY know they are a small business, they don't feel as though they are WORTHY of national or celebrity press placements. Don't forget that no one knows how small you might be behind-the-scenes. You should always brand yourself like the big guns, while always maintaining that same small business attention to detail. Have confidence!

The biggest thing is the push for life/work balance (which isn't an easy thing to do in public relations or social media in a 24-hour news cycle). It's about making time for yourself and doing what you need to do for peace of mind. So that's setting a schedule for yourself to take breaks - lunch (even if it means leaving to buy it and still eating at your desk) and a stop time at night to go to the gym, yoga, anything to clear your mind.

Be nice to everyone you meet.  A stylist assistant may someday be dressing A List celebs.  The intern in the fashion closet may be promoted to fashion director in the future.  That brand that is similar to yours may present a fabulous opportunity for you down the road.  Always be polite and try to develop as many personal relationships as possible.  People are more incline to help a friend or someone they have close ties with.

Jenna Barnett of Visionary5 Jenna Barnett of Visionary5
When I first started in PR, I wish I knew that you find more success when you don't play by the rules. As soon as I stopped trying to pitch the way all publicists pitch, I found so much more success in my communication with editors and journalists. Don't be afraid to try an out-of-the-box or silly pitch. If you can make a journalist laugh or catch their attention with a clever subject line, they'll most likely respond to your email. A few other things I wish I knew when I first started: The importance of brevity in pitches (and all emails for that matter), making sure to only send pitches to the appropriate editors, and doing my own research [outside of a database] to find the right journalist to pitch.
Nadine Jolson Desirae Vivian of Jolson Creative
Always do your research. Journalists will hammer it home that that is there biggest pet peeve with PR people, while getting to know who you are pitching is crucial, it goes beyond that. You also need to know who you are as a brand, personality, etc. and how you want to be perceived in the world so you need to build your PR to support that, which is where our background in journalism and image building/brand marketing comes in to play.

Knowledge is invaluable because it benefits everyone in the end from clients, to you as a professional, and going the extra mile to get to know your industry and who you are as the brand is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

Effective communication is key. While it seems like such a simple concept, it can make all the difference in a situation.

Lastly, surround yourself with people who will push you to do better. It will make you a better professional in all aspects and the drive to succeed is infectious.

Christina Perez Christine Perez of the S3 Agency
I wish I knew the importance of small gestures. Helping a journalist with a source, retweeting a story, and sending a thank you note are all small things that can go a long way in building relationships.
Stephanie Scott of First and Last PR Stephanie Scott of First and Last PR
I wish that I would have known which questions to ask before signing up to sponsor a celebrity event. Live events and gifting suites are great because you get to showcase your products to a high level audience in one spot - most will give you the opportunity to interact with celebrities and media - but really needed to be vetted before committing to do them. For newer businesses, there are a lot of associated costs involved to consider including travel, staffing, etc that will also add to the cost. Now, I weigh the long-term goals of tour PR plan and the guaranteed ROI before committing. I also make sure to incorporate a social media plan for each event so that we can maximize on the experience.
