Diary of a Small Business Owner, nomie baby Edition: On Patience & Balance

Katie DanzigerMeet Katie Danziger.  The saying, "necessity is the mother of invention," certainly is true for this mom of 3!  When her baby spilled formula while in her car seat she saw its care instructions read, "Do not machine wash." While trying to spot clean, and wrestling with getting the cover back on, she thought, "there has to be an easier way. Why isn't there a bib for the car seat?" After many searches which came up empty, an idea was born.  Fast forward a couple years and the nomie baby brand includes multiple products, is available not only on her website but at national retailers, and both Katie & nomie baby have been spotted everywhere from the CBS Early Show to MSNBC to New York Magazine.

And now, Katie’s Diary begins……

A little bit on balance….

Balance is tricky and depends on everything going as planned, but we all know that almost never happens.  Today for instance... I knew that I had a phone interview with the New York Times at 11am, and my mom was coming over at noon to discuss the bridal shower we are throwing, so I had to make sure that I checked the orders early, so they could be processed and sent to the warehouse for packing and shipping, while getting my 3 kids up and out to school, which meant helping the little one get dressed, and going in 4 times to wake one of the teenagers!  It all happened, but I did feel as if I was in 3 places at once, and I guess I was.  I know that this afternoon, there are about 45 minutes of quiet "in between" time, before everyone starts coming home from school, when I will be able to review orders, try to get some tweets and Facebook postings out, and research contacts for rental car companies, because I know they would be perfect for the car seat covers.

Patience, Patience!

Josie in nomie baby car seatWe have all been told that patience is a virtue, but I am also learning that it is an important quality to have in business too.   I am very used to checking things off my list quickly before they land in the dreaded pile on my desk, or bed.   However, I am learning that while some things might be on the top of my mind, they are just one of many things on someone else's to-do list.  Therefore, it's important to keep plugging along, and touching base.  One of the other things I have noticed is that good news often brings more good news.

As much as people say they want to be the first, or the only..., they also seem to be afraid to be that as well.  Therefore, when I am able to show stores that other stores carry the nomie baby line, they seem more interested in jumping on board.  It's fascinating to see the interest that has gotten stirred up since buybuyBaby.com, BedBathandBeyond.com and CSNStores.com have started carrying the nomie baby line, and Diapers.com has always been a wonderful partner.

I am looking forward to talking with new retailers who are excited to be a part of the nomie baby family.  While it hasn't happened over-night, although to many out there, that is how it seems, it does happen - with patience!  Perhaps the more I talk about patience, the more it will sink in!

Introducing the Diary of a Small Business Owner Series - Starting this Wednesday!

Ever wonder if there is another entrepreneur experiencing the same highs and lows, ups and downs, success and challenges that you are?  Ever curious about what the path you’re on looks like, say, one or two years down the road?  We’re guessing you have, and you do, and as entrepreneurs we do the same thing too.  Because of these sentiments, and because of our love of the stories we hear from so many of you on a daily basis, we’re proud to announce our newest blog series launching next week: Diary of a Small Business Owner.

In this series you will follow the stories of three entrepreneurs:

Jackie NeesA virtual assistant from Michigan who relaunched last spring after taking some time off to get clear about the kinds of services she wanted to offer and who her ideal client was. It was a much needed break that has proven to be exactly what she needed at the time to kick things into high gear. Things have been taking off ever since she is ready to kick it up another notch and plan some big changes in her business in the very near future including some rebranding and new plans to service people locally and virtually.

Jenny Greer and Erin BickleyTwo fashion savvy female entrepreneurs – and close friends – from Georgia who designed a pair of must-have “little black pants” that combine fashion and shapewear in a stylish compression garment.  They’re just out of the entrepreneurial gates and are in the launching process, reaching out to editors, sending out samples and running their own DIY PR campaign, learning social media and getting ready to see what the world thinks of their pants!

Katie DanzigerA product designer from New York City who produces problem-solving gear for parents inspired by her own experiences with her children.  A brand that started by accident, it is now currently selling in national retailers while trying to maintain a work-life balance between raising three children and “raising a business”.

You can look for them blogging weekly about their entrepreneurial journey right here on our blog beginning next week as well as follow snippets of scoop to hold you over until the next week via our @collectivee Twitter via the hashtag #smallbizdiary.

Big Changes to Facebook Pages Provide Big Opportunities

Facebook has been making changes to the way regular people and business use it, and they've been making them fast. More and more people are using Facebook for personal reasons, and businesses know that, so have been clamoring to get in front of their customers. Facebook has been watching how businesses are using it, as well as how regular people have been reacting, and have made changes to help the experience overall.

We asked the pros over at SocialBees to break down the changes Facebook made to business pages. SocialBees design Facebook pages for businesses, so we knew they would have a great understanding of the changes, and how they affect you.

Thank you Thomas Evans, VP of Operations at Socialbees, for contributing this article to our blog!

While it is taking many businesses owners time to get used to the changes Facebook recently rolled out for Pages, the changes provide some exciting new opportunities for Page owners.  Let's start with the basics:

PAGES LAYOUT LOOKS LIKE YOUR PERSONAL PROFILE LAYOUT, WITH A TWIST
1. The first change you will notice is that the style of the Pages is now very similar to personal profiles (which also changed recently, as you may remember). The tabs are no longer featured at the top of the page, and have been replaced by a navigation section on the left side. Don't worry, all of your custom Facebook tabs and landing pages are still featured, they will now just be accessed from the new navigation area.

2. The other main layout change is the addition of a line of photos that is displayed for all visitors, just like the new personal profiles.

3. Finally, instead of showing the posts in chronological order, they now are sorted using similar algorithm that the Home Page' Top News feed does.

POSTING ABILITY
And now for the fun stuff. Administrators of Facebook Pages now have the ability to post comments as either themselves, or as the brand, company or page that they are representing. Basically, you can now browse through Facebook as your Page. This is critical as it provides the opportunity to form and strengthen personal relationships as your brand, which is one of the main goals of using Social Media. You can now visit other pages as your page, and like them and comment on their posts. You can even interact with public personal Facebook profiles as your page. To access this, simply find the 'Account' settings at the top right of the page, and select "Use Facebook as Page."

NOTIFICATIONS
Once you have switched to the new Facebook Page layout (all pages will automatically be switched in March 2011) you will probably start to see a lot more activity in your notifications. There are many instances when page owners simply forget to check if anyone has commented on their wall, now, you can get individual notifications for each of your pages to ensure that no fan goes neglected. You also have the option to receive email alerts each time a comment is posted.

When Facebook changed the layout of personal pages, there were a lot of complaints and users did not see the point of making the changes. While this may be the case again for Facebook Pages, users will learn to appreciate and utilize the new features as they are significant improvements to the Facebook Pages experience.

Overused Press Release Buzz Words: Don't be THAT Business....

Oh press release mistakes, I could write a book about them.....in fact maybe I will, but I digress....New businesses often run into problems with their press releases due to lack of experience and pr training, and also due to their need to "wow" the press.  This often leads to "press release overcompensation" as I like to call it.  Just like when you're being overcomplimented by a suitor or friend or relative and you begin to question its authenticity, the same can be said about press releases that are filled with buzz words or too many adjectives.

First of all, let's travel back to the definition of a press release.  Answers.com calls them "An announcement of an event, performance, or other newsworthy item that is issued to the press". Entrepreneur.com calls them "A public relations announcement issued to the news media and other targeted publications for the purpose of letting the public know of company developments".  FreeDictionary.com calls them "An announcement of an event, performance, or other newsworthy item that is issued to the press".  None of these definitions says anything about "writing an editorial worth article" or "write some great Daily Candy style copy" or "write the story for me".  They want the facts, and just the facts please.

One way to be sure you stick to the facts and nothing but them is to steer clear of using too many buzzwords in your release.  Why not try to be original?  Too many press releases are littered with some overused words that have lost their sparkle and power, and you don't want yours to be another one.  Just tell the news what they need to hear, make it easy and to the point, follow proper press release style and format, and be easy to contact.  Let the press write the story and decide what adjectives to use!

Not sure of which words to avoid?  We turn to PRFilter for that scoop and PR/Marketing/Social Media expert Adam Sherk for that, and have linked HERE for you so you can print out their list and use it as a guide for when you write your next release!

A Good Blog About Hate (!!): Lessons Learned from Kurt Cobain, Kiri Blakeley & Russell Simmons

Growing up, if we ever used the word hate (for example, "I hate Susie Snowflakes" or "I hate Mrs. Third Grade Teacher for reprimanding me") it was nearly akin to swearing.  Hate is a powerful word, feeling and concept.  To this day I try to keep the word and concept out of my vocabulary, but lately it seeped into conversations again as I heard from more than one business owner about the "haters out there" knocking their businesses, ideas, writing, success - you name it.

Often as entrepreneurs we have to toot our own horn - a lot - as we're the ones steering and powering our own ships.  Often we march to the beat of our own drummers, as it's this beat that beckoned us to leave the "normal" work week and venture into the unknown, to launch our own venture.  This same part of us that leads us to exciting and great things, also often leads to "haters".  Whether from jealousy, misunderstanding, not understanding, ignorance or their own unhappiness, it's rare that success isn't accompanied by not so nice messages or conversations whispered about you, that are often relayed to you through the grapevine.

There has not been one client we've ever worked with over at Red Branch PR who, when beginning to experience a moderate to higher level of success, hasn't come to us lamenting about former friends and even family who begin to complain about their job, their "new personality", the entrepreneur's lack of time for others, accusations of "developing an ego" or even having people who don't know them or what they do attack them for one reason or another.

So what do we do?  How do we respond?  Interestingly enough two conversations popped up in my day today that addressed just that, and I'm going to share them with you.

The first is from Kiri Blakeley, writer for Forbes and author of Can’t Think Straight: A Memoir of Mixed Up Love, who has been experiencing this type of hate first hand ever since her memoir became a hot topic in the press, and she wrote about it for Forbes.  Though outlets from the Today Show to AOL to Joy Behar were kind, Kiri was labeled "really dumb" by a blogger, a "slut" by the Library Journal (Sabina's note: can you believe people think that is appropriate?!) Even her next-door neighbor turned on her.  Kiri reflected on this, and the thought process that got her out of feeling bad about, well, feeling hated in THIS article.  She actually pulls from Kurt Cobain for her lesson, which in her own words can be summarized as "... I’d rather be hated for what I am than loved for what I’m not."  I agree Kiri!

The second answer to this common quandry came to me from one of my favorite entrepreneur's, Russell Simmons, by way of my business partner.  In his autobiography Russell talks about all the people who have talked negatively about him throughout his career which he sums up in his lessons with the advice, "Let your haters be your best PR".  Amen to that!  When they're busy talking about you to anyone who will listen, your "haters" are saying:  This person is worth talking about (a lot) and here is what they are doing XYZ".  The more they talk the more people will hear your name and what you're up to, and if they are worth it they will be able to assess your character, product, idea or service on their own!

We all hope that as we travel along our entrepreneurial journey, the marathon race that is small business, we'll be flanked by positive encouragement and support but at times that won't always be the case. Hopefully when those moments do pop up you'll remember what Kiri, Kurt and Russell remind us of and let it fall by the wayside.  You have no time for that hate anyways!

How to Get Your Mac Computer Online Using Your iPhone

You're on the road or in a train with loads of free time to get things done that require you to be online. You need your computer to get online, but you're not in a place that has wireless. Or you're in the car, so you keep missing hotspots from the local cable providers like Optimum or TimeWarner. Or you're on an Internet connection that suddenly goes dead or gets overcroweded. What to do? If you have a mac, here's how you can turn your iPhone into a modem so that you can get online.

Get to know this word: tethering. It's your new magic to being connected online all of the time (almost). Tethering is the ability to get your computer online through use of a mobile phone that is connected to the internet.

1. Sign up at your service provider (AT&T or Verizon) for the tethering service. It's been ranging between $15-$20/month for 2GB of data (that's a lot of data). AT&T is increasing the amount of data from 2GB to 4GB for select customers to stay competitive with Verizon. I know this because I got a random text from AT&T informing me that they were increasing my data for no charge. The data is what you send and receive online, like emails, pictures in emails, website pages, etc. Before you lock in, ask your provider to tell you how much data you've been using to make sure you're not about to blow yourself beyond 2GB and into a higher bill.

2. AT&T or Verizon may send you directions on how to activate. Follow those directions.

3. Once tethering is activated on your iPhone, go to "Settings" (the gray gears) > select "General" > select "Network" > click "Internet Tethering > and move the switch to "On".

4. Your iPhone may tell you that Bluetooth is Off. Select to "Turn on Bluetooth". Your phone is now ready to talk to you Mac.

5. Now you'll need to set your Mac up to look for and recognize your iPhone. Go to "System Preferences" (the gray gears) > under Hardware click "Bluetooth" > and click the little plus + sign to start the process to search for your iPhone. I have not included those directions, so you're on your own for this part.

6. Once your iPhone is set up as something that your Mac looks for and can connect to, you'll need to connect to it each time you want to tether, or to get online using your iPhone. So when you're doing this another time, like, the day after you set this up, you'll need to:

6a. Turn your Bluetooth on if it's not already. From the top right hand side of your screen, click on the little Bluetooth icon (two triangles on top of each other) and click it to "Bluetooth On". Under that selection, make sure your Mac is "Discoverable".

6b. Go to "System Preferences" > Bluetooth. This part always gets wacky for me, so it may for you as well. It may take several tries before it connects. From the Bluetooth window, select your iPhone on the left, and then on the right, click on the "Connected: No". Under the column on the left, you'll see a little gear with a down arrow on it. Click the gear, and select "Connect to Network". Sometimes, nothing may happen. I usually try about 20 different things, and then come back to this, and it works. So it may be a matter of time before it connects.

You are done. :)

In fact, I just wrote and published this article via my tethered connection.

NYS Sales Tax: To Accrue or Not To Accrue...Part I

As an Advanced Certified QuickBooks Pro Advisor, I have helped hundreds of small businesses throughout the New York area set up their QuickBooks files in order to collect sales tax and remit, or pay sales tax payments to the state.  One question has always alluded my clients and me:  Using which of the methods below should we accrue, or put aside sales tax?

  • "as of the invoice date"
  • "upon receipt of payment"

To accrue sales tax "as of the invoice date" means:
"If I send out an invoice which includes sales tax but I haven't yet collected on that invoice when I have to file my sales tax return, do I still need to pay the state for the sales tax included on that uncollected invoice?"

To accrue sales tax "upon receipt of payment" means:
"Do I need to pay the state for sales tax collected on PAID invoices only, and not the ones that haven't paid yet?"

After consulting with a Senior Tax Policy Analyst for New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, I finally learned the answer.  Ready for this?  "Sales tax must be reported/remitted based on THE DATE OF THE TRANSACTION."  This means you MUST accrue (put aside) and remit (pay) sales tax as of the invoice date for New York State. For all other states, you should call your state tax department, or ask your accountant.

So now you might ask, but I use the cash accounting method (meaning you only report income and expenses when you actually collect or pay), why must I remit sales tax I haven't yet collected?  According to the analyst, "Although your business may be on a cash basis for accounting purposes, for sales tax purposes the tax is due at the time of the sale, whether or not payment is received."

QUICKBOOKS TIP:
If you are using QuickBooks and collect NYS Sales Tax, make sure the accrue sales tax "as of the invoice date" box is marked in your sales tax settings.

Stay tuned for what to do when you have remitted sales tax on an invoice that you NEVER wind up collecting. This should be interesting!

Elevator Pitch Practice Hits Home: Can You Create a Three Sentence Bio?

I was honored and excited to find out that I was going to speak as part of Tory Johnson's Spark & Hustle National Tour this March when it stops in NYC.  As you may know, I'm believe firmly that understanding and mastering the art of Do It Yourself PR is one of the most powerful tools a small business or entrepreneur can possess.

Well here's a confession: I pride myself at being quite able to create strategic and to-the-point pitches for brands on a regular basis, yet today I was met with a request that had me stumped for longer than I thought it would...Tory's team at S & H asked for my headshot and a three sentence biography.  THREE SENTENCES?  For some reason I could not find three sentences that summarized everything I did and felt about entrepreneurship, PR and my role with small businesses as a whole.

While working on it I began to wonder.....can all of you tell your story in three sentences?  Sure we talk a lot about elevator pitches, but these often focus on our business and our products/services.  Can you do an elevator pitch about yourself?  I'm guessing some of you can as you use it on a regular basis at parties, networking events and in press interviews. I am also guessing a lot of you cannot as you're often so focused on pitching your brands you forget about the brand that is YOU.

So this week I challenge you to create a three sentence bio for yourself.  Find one that really captures brand "you", and try to use it when you're out and about in the future.  I'd love to hear what you come up with, and will feature some in an upcoming blog if you send them in!

Also, should you want to join us at Spark & Hustle this March in NYC (or anywhere on their national tour) you can check out their website HERE and if you are a Tin Shingle member you can take advantage of some great discounts & deals from Tory and her team HERE.

Magazines: The Power of Print

Magazines won't die. They won't! They are too glossy, too matte finished, too palpable to ever be replaced by the etch-a-sketch background of a Kindle or pixel perfect iPhone/Pad or any electronic device on which people read their news and features. I always suspected as much, but never looked into the research on how many people are still buying and reading actual magazines, vs reading their counterparts via phone apps or websites. Personally, I do both, yet it's the power of printed paper that usually skyrockets my inspiration to action.

I was flipping through Esquire when I saw it. The colorful fonts first caught my eye, as I always love it when words are made with different fonts, especially if they are cut out. But then I noticed that the "g" was from Rolling Stone, and the "E" was from Esquire, and hey, are they friends? How can they be in the same ad?

Their publishers have joined together to push the message of Power of Print, in order to "...tell the world of our continued and impassioned belief in the power of the magazine business. We hope to dispel many commonly held myths about the state of our industry, and to share the exciting story of magazine advertising's outstanding value, unmatched recall and vast cultural impact."

Here here! The Power of Print has launched a series of print, video and online ads to re-educate us about print magazine readership. They state that readership has actually grown in the last five years. And I must say, as a recent Manhattan expatriot (I moved 60miles up the Hudson to Beacon, NY), I subscribe the the local paper and pick up three local magazines, Roll, Chronogram, and Hudson Valley Magazine in order to find local goings-on, read locally inspired stories, and to enjoy the reading experience in an unchaotic, never interrupted space. When I get my pedicures, I bring nothing by my iPhone and wallet: iPhone to catch emails, wallet to pay. And as for reading material, I pick up two magazines from the salon's stands to turn the pages through, and not any of their apps. Apps I use at different times, like when I'm stuck in a car without a magazine.

And here's my clipping to prove it:
