The Blue Homestead, founded in 2020 is a mission based organization that promotes self sufficiency and approachable homesteading practices as well as supporting artists who have learning disabilities and may not have been able to get into college because of academics.
Growing up in West Virginia, Kimberly developed both a kinship with the natural world and a gift for repurposing found objects and plant material in imaginative ways; according to her mom, she’s “artsy” and “different.”

In college, Kimberly studied Chemistry and Biology, and produced GMOs for the USDA. Yes, this was fascinating—but not as fascinating as her true passions: fashion and art. In 1992, she left West Virginia to design clothes for Club Kids in New York City.

While making a name for herself in the Club scene, she stumbled into a career as an international designer, creating 3D environmental projections, with virtual imaging, for events, museums, and retail displays. For many years, she traveled the world, serving clients such as Chanel, Burberry, Barney’s, Calvin Klein, the Smithsonian, and MAC Cosmetics; to stay grounded, she grew elaborate organic gardens, canned pickles, and built furniture in her woodworking studio upstate.

Then, in 2008, Kimberly decided it was time to return to her roots, as a treehugger and plant lover. So she started Red Rose & Lavender, a plant and flower shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Running Rose Red & Lavender—and falling in love with the intimate experience of planning events and weddings—she shaped the business into one of the New York area’s premier design and production houses. Now based in the Hudson Valley—and no longer moored to a storefront—Rose Red & Lavender continues to serve New York City and its environs. In the past decade or so, her work has appeared in Martha Stewart Weddings, Real Simple, Vogue, Carats and Cake, and New York Weddings. roseredandlavender.com

Her deep rooted passions for the environment, people's well being and life long learning have lead to the development and creation of Tir-Mitti, and The Blue Homestead.

Kimberly can be found on FB Live every day at 8:00AM at The Blue Homestead, to answer gardening questions and to check in with her children and chickens.

When she’s not plotting her next project, Kimberly enjoys camping, hiking, and canoeing with her family, and of course, growing and making things. Her email is kimberly@ksevilla.com
