About Alissa Rothstein, Owner and Creative Director
I have been an animal lover since day one. There has never been a time that I didn’t have at least one animal – dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils and even a snake! Over the years I have raised Wolfy, a Shetland Sheepdog, and always have a menagerie of various mischievous cats.

I started my professional life as a graphic designer and eventually moved up to become a creative director. I decided to start freelancing as a graphic/web designer, which became Alissa Rothstein Design Studio in 2004.  That business eventually morphed into Marketing Hive, where in addition to offering design services, I help companies analyze and strategize their marketing and social media activities, contribute web and editorial writing services and help to implement a cohesive plan. In a nutshell, what I really do is foster meaningful connections between people.

​Everything was going well until the recession hit. Many of my clients were small businesses that closed due to financial reasons, thereby affecting my business. I needed to find a new career plan.

Cue fate. A woman that I met at Matilda the Algonquin Cat's Annual Fundraiser (and eventually became BFFs with) planted a bug in my ear. She was once a marketing director for a Fortune 500 company until she lost her job. Me in an alternate universe. She started her own pet sitting company and never looked back. She urged me to do the same thing. So I did. And I never looked back.

But I missed my design work. That's when I designed the "Home Alone" cards as a promo to be given to new pet sitting clients. People liked them so much that they said I should try to sell them. So I did. After a while, people started asking me if I could make other safety products. I said "Sure!" And here we are.

Designer to pet sitter to designer. Full circle. Who'd have thought?

What Inspired My Business and Products?
My inspiration was two-fold. As I had previously mentioned, I designed the “Home Alone” cards as a promo to be given to new pet sitting clients. What precipatated that was when a friend was involved in a bad car accident.

Unconscious, she was unable to give the EMTs any information, including the fact that her dog was home alone. No one knew that she was in the hospital, let alone that her beloved fur baby had no one to give him food or walk him. Luckily, she was not hurt too bad and was able to give the hospital staff her information the next day. As I pondered this, I thought to myself what would have happened if she was not able to speak for an extended period?

That was when inspiration struck. I conceived and created the first version of the “My Pets Are Home Alone” cards. Since then, they have been through a few different incarnations, ending up as the latest version with the plastic card with matching key tag.

I am constantly brimming with new ideas - many of them are still in my head, waiting for time and money to develop into viable products. I hope to be able to bring them to fruition for you and your loved ones soon!
