Keen to teach your little linguist a second language? Here’s a fun way to kick start an interest in going bilingual.

Those of us with toddlers already believe they speak a second language. That gorgeous gobbledegook they mutter, with such intent and serious gesticulation. Alas, despite having two toddlers, I still haven’t managed to decipher the majority of what comes out of little mouths. There is a school of thought that indicates the best time to teach a child a second language, is when they’re learning their first one. It seems to make sense – they are already so keen to learn. If you want a soft introduction into teaching your child a second language, these everyday items with a bilingual twist may be just the ticket.

Avid traveller and designer Kimberly Schwede has released a collection of bilingual children’s art: Bebe Bilingual, which she uses to adorn all manner of items. Placemats, flashcards and lunch boxes are decorated with her bright and cheerful artwork, depicting colours, numbers, animals and food in Spanish, French and English. The canvas art at the top of the post, and this one above, are stunning examples of the dual purpose artworks ($60.29).
